The mentor-mentee relationship continued to grow, and by DKC3, they were actually best friends. In 1999, Nintendo and/or Rare attempted to retcon Diddy as Donkey Kong's nephew. That's been somewhat controversial depending on who you ask, but has mostly gone unmentioned since Donkey Kong 64.

Basically, Diddy is a kid who idolized Donkey Kong and started hanging around him, wanting to be just like his hero. DK humored him, but you get the sense he was frustrated that this child wouldn't leave him alone. Then the events of Donkey Kong Country happen, and a deep bond actually develops.

Donkey Kong Land 2 Chimps

Nintendo's website once listed the release date for Donkey Kong Land 2 as September 23rd, but that was incorrect. As perhaps the only gamer who waited in that reservation pick-up line at Toys 'R' Us on Friday, September 27, 1996, to pick up DKL2 instead of an N64, you'll have to trust me on this.

While Donkey Kong Land 2's "official" 30th anniversary is September 30th, it first went on sale on the 27th! As Nintendo of America bumped up the Nintendo 64's launch from Monday to the Friday before, any games released alongside it ALSO hit shelves early. Happy 30th, DKL2! (And the Nintendo 64.)

And that's perfectly fair! It's not going to hit for everyone. At least the series is back in such a way that a Donkey Kong game won't remain a once-in-a-generation occurrence, increasing the chance that there WILL be a DK release that you'll enjoy!

I said a year ago that if Donkey Kong Bananza was the last game fans got, it would serve as a worthy finale to the series. It tied together numerous threads in a gorgeous tapestry that somehow pleased all generations of fans. Thankfully, it’s not really the end, but the basis of a new beginning.

I said at the beginning of 2025, when the redesign was unveiled, that it was a bargain with the devil we had to accept to get consistent Donkey Kong releases from Nintendo. But as it turns out, the redesign has really grown on me! I don't mind it!
