The #Kongversation marks 30 years of Donkey Kong Land 2! @altermentality.bsky.social and I travel back to September 1996 to chat about the inappropriate ads, a lack of Glimmer, the ridiculous Bonus Barrel placement, and Klubba in mourning (among other headcanons). www.dkvine.com?p=podcasts&s...

While Donkey Kong Land 2's "official" 30th anniversary is September 30th, it first went on sale on the 27th! As Nintendo of America bumped up the Nintendo 64's launch from Monday to the Friday before, any games released alongside it ALSO hit shelves early. Happy 30th, DKL2! (And the Nintendo 64.)

I said a year ago that if Donkey Kong Bananza was the last game fans got, it would serve as a worthy finale to the series. It tied together numerous threads in a gorgeous tapestry that somehow pleased all generations of fans. Thankfully, it’s not really the end, but the basis of a new beginning.

Donkey Kong Land 2's 30th anniversary is in a few days, and @altermentality.bsky.social is coming back to the #Kongversation to discuss the odd one out from Rare's DK lineage! Neither a new game nor a faithful port, and hyped as more of a bridge to Country 3, how do fans view it three decades later?

I always thought redesigning Rare's Donkey Kong would be a deal breaker for me. While I'll always prefer the 1990s design, Bananza was a master class in how to roll out a huge change, reassuring you throughout that it's the same guy. By the time I got to the end, I didn't even notice the difference!

Shortly before release, both the Roman numeral and subtitle were dropped in favor of a basic "2" underneath a reconfigured Land logo. However, Donkey Kong Land III reverted to both the old Land logo AND a Roman numeral, creating a bizarre (or Bazaar) inconsistency in the trilogy's branding.
The original "Donkey Kong Land II: Diddy's Kong Quest" logo, with the three NTSC Donkey Kong Land games displayed underneath for comparison. The new Donkey Kong Land 2 logo removed the subtitle and changed the Land logo, shrinking the font and the view of the palm trees in its background. Donkey Kong Land III not only reverted to the original Donkey Kong Land logo, but also used a Roman numeral, as was planned for DKL2.

While the mock-up box art created for pre-ordering games was never meant to be final, Donkey Kong Land 2's was somewhat interesting, given that it had the gall to use the DKC2 render that put Donkey Kong front and center. However, I'll admit framing it between the logo and subtitle does look nice.
Several Game Boy games in the 1996 Sears Wish Book, including Super Mario Land, Donkey Kong Land, Kirby's Dream Land 2, Tetris Attack (titled to its side in a rush composition job), Donkey Kong Land 2 (then known as Donkey Kong Land II: Diddy's Kong Quest), Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins, Kirby's Block Ball, and Toy Story.

Donkey Kong Land 2's box art is an early placeholder using a render of Diddy, Donkey, and Dixie Kong embracing on a sky-blue background.

We're approaching Donkey Kong Land 2's 30th anniversary! While it being a handheld retread of Donkey Kong Country 2 WAS disappointing in isolation, it was still an exciting stepping stone to Country 3. Two Donkey Kong games in two months! Here's the announcement from Nintendo Power Vol. 85.
The blurb announcing Donkey Kong Land 2 in the June 1996 issue of Nintendo Power. Still titled "Donkey Kong Land 2: Diddy's Kong Quest," the half-page features Super Game Boy-enhanced screenshots of Diddy next to a Squawks Barrel and Zinger, Dixie Kong riding a roller coaster behind a Klank, Squitter in an ice cavern underneath a Zinger, and Diddy on the deck of a pirate ship near a Neek. In the upper right corner is a render of a Krook from Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest.

"Diddy and Dixie retrace their steps, spins and twirls from last year's Super NES hit, DKC 2, in this Super Game Boy adaptation from Nintendo and Rare. The quality of the graphics speak for themselves in the screen shots shown here. What you can't see is the incredible animation that gives the characters a 3-D feel even on Game Boy. The story is the same as DKC 2. Diddy and Dixie are out to rescue Donkey Kong. Along the way they meet friendly animals including a pogo snake, a speedy spider and a fiery seal. Early indications are that DKL 2 is faithful translation of DKC 2, so don't expect new stages. Nintendo will release DKL 2 this fall."

One thing I always appreciated post-Reign is how uncomfortable Clark clearly was with the idea of him ACTUALLY having been dead, unable to say it and always rationalizing what happened. And that’s the kind of mental anguish I wish “Dead Again!” had actually explored, beyond small moments like this.

Rare is big into cheeky branding! It was likely viewed as cute to give Diddy and Dixie matching Nintendo and Rare logos to celebrate that partnership. (Diddy's clothing went unadorned in 1994.) Nintendo stuck with it for lack of better options until finding a new way for their hats to match!

"What if something appears that shouldn't? You either dismiss it, or you accept that there is much more to the world than you think. But not Donkey Kong Racing and Kameo. Those won't be released on this thing. C'est la vie! You'll have many bitter disappointments." Happy 25th to the GameCube!
The back of the NTSC Nintendo GameCube box when it was released in 2001. It includes an infamous flowery quote by Shigeru Miyamoto.

"What if everything that you see is more than what you see-the person next to you is a warrior and the space that appears empty is a door to another world? What if something appears that shouldn't? You either dismiss it, or you accept that there is more to the world than you think. Perhaps it is really a doorway, and if you choose to go inside, you'll find many unexpected things."

Of note is the inclusion of three Rare games: Star Fox Adventures, Donkey Kong Racing, and Kameo: Elements of Power. Only Star Fox Adventures was released before Microsoft purchased Rare. Kameo wound up on the Xbox 360, while Donkey Kong Racing would evolve into Sabreman Stampede before quietly being canceled in the mid-2000s.

From my recollection, the Rare connection wasn't really played down, at least not under Nintendo of America. The classic "Rareware" logo was still prominent in marketing, about as much as any Nintendo-published Rare game. For example, it appeared dead center on the label of the Jones Soda tie-in!
A bottle of Jones Soda Green Apple Soda, rebranded as Fox Fuel, with Fox, Krystal, General Scales, the Nintendo GameCube logo, and the Rareware logo on the label. Alongside it is a roll of Star Fox Adventures Game Tips toilet paper, which did not have the Rare logo on it.
