Shugart & Taagepera have argued that causality is reverse: number of elected assembly parties determines degree of fragmentation among candidates for presidency

PanAmerican @dkpseudo.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Been awhile since I read this stuff, but IIRC elected presidency on avg does NOT affect number of seated parties but can cause higher variance (basically, fewer big parties in some countries, more fragmentation in others).

This likely happens w/ PR House if no threshold & district magnitude was nationwide like Israel and Netherlands. Otherwise restricting district magnitude to states (so bunch of states elect just one or few Reps) or capping multimember districts (e.g. 5-8) would raise avg seat share of largest party

State and local elections may be more effective in stalling the Trump admin's immigration agenda. Examples include ending 287(g) agreements, data/records sharing, detainer/hold requests, local jail/facility/courthouse access, etc

Some folks say that introducing multipartyism into presidentialism makes impeachment/removal a credible threat to a tyrannical president and cabinet secretaries. Folks who admire confidence votes in parliamentarism see normalizing impeachment/removal under presidentialism as an improvement.

This is a pretty savvy move from the DC preservation office. If Trump takes the suggestion (which he won't) it at least follows the original design. If he doesn't at least *study* the congressionally-endorsed columns as an alternative, it opens the door for very strong NEPA/106 lawsuits.
