Galleys reviewed, proofs corrected, looking nice. Honestly? I think this is good. I took some swings and i'm proud of the result.

Putting aside the obvious answer (whichever you're vibing to at the moment lo!) I'd say the sci-fi one just to add variety to what's on the table.

I enjoy your music - so thank you :) I even referenced you in a story i wrote once, "One Night in a Sushi Bar of Uncertain Parameters," (in a sci-fi anthology: Strange Wars); the protag hears you (and Norah Jones) playing in rotation on the sound system in a Twilight Zone-ish sushi bar. FWIW lol

Darby O'Gill! (Maybe; tho weirdly i must've been so traumatized by the duck scene in Journey to the Centre of the Earth (we all know what i'm talking about) that for years as a kid i thought i had dreamed it...until as an adult i was re-watching the movie and that scene came up! :0 )

Trying to draft a "submit for review" query for my up-coming book (since: "write it and wait for people to discover it" proved of limited success in the past lol); but unsure the best approach. Hard sell? ("This book will blow your mind!"), self-effacing? ("If you can squeeze me in...") Etc.

Like Holmes or Dracula (contemporary stories that to us are "Victorian") I think TZ gets enhanced by its 50s vibe: staccato dialogue; chiaroscuro, etc. The '80s one, too, I think ages a bit like wine. I enjoyed your list, btw. Both eps i agreed with and eps that you got me re-thinking about :)

DK Latta @dklatta.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Not because later iterations can't be good (the 1980s revival produced some memorable eps and, being Canadian, i fondly recall the batch produced in Canada to boost the number of '80s eps for syndication). But the sum is greater, as they say, and Serling TZ is the OG TZ lol. 2/2

TZ is that rare show where 10 people could make 10 "best" lists...and they'd all be right lol. Such an ideal mix of writing, acting(!), B&W cinematography, etc. yet glued together by a singular "voice." Which is why i think revivals (and like anthologies) have trouble recapturing its lightning. 1/2

I periodically see people on-line lamenting lack of literacy skills: comprehension, ability to parse nuance, themes, etc. But sometimes the people who raise the alarm the loudest...react the poorest to others simply having different takes. Different takes ≠ poor literacy (necessarily)

Lists like this are mostly to be argued about lol, but i do wish they were self-aware of how American-centric they are; not that they *shouldn't* be (since the compilers are American) just acknowledge "Best Shows Shown on Americsn TV" or something. Anyhoo...only one show? Slings & Arrows (S1)

Im confused. I always tnought a criticism of the movie version of Camelot was they got actors who couldn't sing...like Richard Harris. TIL that Harris *could* sing, put out an album, even hsd a hit single. huh. music.youtube.com/watch?list=R...

There's something fun about the stripped down, no frils approach to comic strip storytelling. It's not like these old Star Trek newspaper strips are significantly better or deeper than the comic books - but there's a charm in the format. Plus, dig the Motion Picture era uniforms :)
A three panel sequence from the daily Star Trek newspaper strip of Kirk and Spock talking.

(Why they call 'em "think pieces") i found the Moench issues i read a bit derivative, esp. of Gerry Conway's run. (Conway recycled but like he was repurposing/expanding cliches). But maybe what i missed: Moench knew he was just playing with the toys (maybe moreso than MofKF or MK) and that was OK

I know that some people don't think these types of things are important but I really do. Cultural change precedes political change. When you don't have the culture, it's more difficult to win politically or to sustain political wins. newrepublic.com/post/215697/...

I’ll also add: this is the executive mindset that I watched destroy my own industry. Layoffs cause a brief bump to a stock price. Executives do them, knowing they’ll look good for a bit to the money people — but long term, you can only expect fewer people to do more work before something breaks.

Canada, maybe more than other countries, does seem to be shaped by the "great man" theory; in that PMs often seem to have a profound affect not just on their parties but the national identity. For better...or worse.

I know journalism is dying from a thousand cuts but is anyone digging into the BTS of the Liberals? Seems like there must be some disaffecfed Trudeau Liberals too cowardly to stand up; or, conversely, were there a lot of Blue Libs silent during Trudeau's tenure? Seems like a potential news piece.

Are public/private schools as big a thing in Canada as in tbe US (or UK)? I often see Americans wrestling with the dilemma of where to send their kids and my experience was just "wherever's closest". Am i just oblivious? Is that a Big city thing or is there a larger national/cultural difference?

i mean, just look at how the populists talked about the railroad barons and others like them. "The fruits of the toil of millions are boldly stolen to build up colossal fortunes, unprecedented in the history of the world, while their possessors despise the republic and endanger liberty."

Growing up Bronze Age i never fully processed how the character had developed, or how much O'Neil was influential on that. (And ya i do feel a problem with a lot of modern comics is they flatten characters like Bats, Supes, Spidey into simple archetypes rather than people who lean into archetypes)

I've always found it frustratng how many critics blithely conflate war-is-hell movies with anti-war movies (in part because they are contrasted with the straight jingoistic war movie). Funnily a movie that alluded to this was The Stunt Man (a once-"classic" now more obscure flick i think)
