I periodically see people on-line lamenting lack of literacy skills: comprehension, ability to parse nuance, themes, etc. But sometimes the people who raise the alarm the loudest...react the poorest to others simply having different takes. Different takes ≠ poor literacy (necessarily)

Im confused. I always tnought a criticism of the movie version of Camelot was they got actors who couldn't sing...like Richard Harris. TIL that Harris *could* sing, put out an album, even hsd a hit single. huh. music.youtube.com/watch?list=R...

There's something fun about the stripped down, no frils approach to comic strip storytelling. It's not like these old Star Trek newspaper strips are significantly better or deeper than the comic books - but there's a charm in the format. Plus, dig the Motion Picture era uniforms :)
A three panel sequence from the daily Star Trek newspaper strip of Kirk and Spock talking.

(Why they call 'em "think pieces") i found the Moench issues i read a bit derivative, esp. of Gerry Conway's run. (Conway recycled but like he was repurposing/expanding cliches). But maybe what i missed: Moench knew he was just playing with the toys (maybe moreso than MofKF or MK) and that was OK

My frustration is all the smug, Trudeau-is-cringe, Trudeau-must-go pundits now acting outraged by Carney. Isn't this what you wanted?

I know that some people don't think these types of things are important but I really do. Cultural change precedes political change. When you don't have the culture, it's more difficult to win politically or to sustain political wins. newrepublic.com/post/215697/...

I’ll also add: this is the executive mindset that I watched destroy my own industry. Layoffs cause a brief bump to a stock price. Executives do them, knowing they’ll look good for a bit to the money people — but long term, you can only expect fewer people to do more work before something breaks.

Canada, maybe more than other countries, does seem to be shaped by the "great man" theory; in that PMs often seem to have a profound affect not just on their parties but the national identity. For better...or worse.

I know journalism is dying from a thousand cuts but is anyone digging into the BTS of the Liberals? Seems like there must be some disaffecfed Trudeau Liberals too cowardly to stand up; or, conversely, were there a lot of Blue Libs silent during Trudeau's tenure? Seems like a potential news piece.

Are public/private schools as big a thing in Canada as in tbe US (or UK)? I often see Americans wrestling with the dilemma of where to send their kids and my experience was just "wherever's closest". Am i just oblivious? Is that a Big city thing or is there a larger national/cultural difference?

i mean, just look at how the populists talked about the railroad barons and others like them. "The fruits of the toil of millions are boldly stolen to build up colossal fortunes, unprecedented in the history of the world, while their possessors despise the republic and endanger liberty."

It is Terry Fox Day, the run/walk in his name to raise money for cancer research. I learn it is now in 30 countries. That gallant 18 year old who did his own run in 1980, before his cancer stopped him, started something global. He tops most polls I’ve ever seen here for most-admired Canadian.

Watching my timeline fill up with Canadians smugly insisting we aren't susceptiple to Trumpism and Poilievre is just Harper 2.0???? Harper was the proto-Trump. He walked so Trump could run. Harper wasnt a boor or sex creep, but in terms of policies he absolutely was test driving the same agenda.

One of the great crimes agaist Canadian arts n culture was the CBC shutting down its radio drama department. Because in a country where it's hard to get the moola together for film/TV, audio-radio-(now podcast!) drama can be a great li'l Burgess Shale of cultural incubation. But some persevere 👇

The right is leaning heavily on the "socialism / communism" bogey man but you wonder how much traction it has. Just as people blame the resurgence of Fascism on WW 2 being ancient history...the Cold War was a couple of generations ago. Not sure younger folk are as swayed by the Red Scare propaganda

A funny thing about cultural tropes (and the "zeitgeist") is how many Twilight Zone episodes were Western-themed. Which today seems idiosyncratic, like Rod Serling was obsessed with the milieu. But then you realize that Westerns were just a ubiquitous part of the TV landscape then.

I loved the original Deathlok; epitomy of the experimentation of 1970s "mainstream" comics (where flaws are part of what makes it intriguing). A product if its time (cyborgs) AND prescient (cyberpunk-before-cyberpunk). Have never read the MacDuffie run but interest piqued now. Interesting overview 👇

We all want to be pub & paid for our stories, but art is about communicating. I was thinking about getting a hold notice fir a story because "someone" on the editorial team liked it. And i thought, even if the story is rejected, at least 1 person went on a journey with my characters...and liked it.

Always thought someone should create a Bluesky called "Comics Never Used to be Political!" and then just post pics like this over 40 years old scene where the characters, after being caught in a clash involving right wing activists (in white robes yet!) note the absence of police.
