The one in Pasadena is literally in the middle of a neighborhood! You can see other people's front yards from some of the courtrooms! It's nice, still. The one in SF is much nicer.

Over a 20-year period, people were sentenced to prison more often, and for longer terms, in years when prosecutors were up for election, a Northwestern Law study finds. In other words, prosecutors were more eager to rob people’s freedom when they thought it would help them politically.

Well that depends. Do you think words have meanings? Like, when people say things, should we attach linguistic definitions to the words they use? Or do you think, like, you know, nothing really means anything, language is just kinda jazz and we should just kinda groove and zone out?

4th Cir. says that post-Loper Bright Enters. it will not defer to the Board of Immigration Appeals' framework for treating vacated convictions as nevertheless having immigration consequences. Big. www.ca4.uscourts.gov/opinions/251...
While we understand this line of reasoning, we cannot endorse it. The statutory definition of “conviction” does not allow it. There is no statutory basis for asking why the state court acted and distinguishing between substantive defects and rehabilitative purposes. The effort to focus on state-court motive boils down to a policy judgment and an attempt to divine what Congress would do if faced with the question of vacated judgments. But that’s not how statutory interpretation works. See Scalia & Garner, Reading Law § 60 (rejecting the “false notion that when a situation is not quite covered by 18 a statute, the court should reconstruct what the legislature would have done had it confronted the issue”).The Board’s framework for analyzing vacated convictions may make good policy, but it is not the result of good statutory interpretation. Because Yanez Piedra’s drug conviction has been vacated, she is not now an “alien convicted of” a controlled-substance offense. The Board’s decision denying remand thus rested on an incorrect legal conclusion. So Yanez Piedra’s first challenge succeeds.11 But her second challenge fails, because the regulations dealing with the timing of voluntary departure are reasonable.

Californians: fun fact. The state comptroller basically operates a lost-and-found, where unclaimed property ends up. Sometimes this is just money that you are owed by somebody for something small that didn't end up in your hands. Anyway, it takes about one minute to search online: claimit.ca.gov

‘Say yes and never do it’ Mel Brooks knew how to deal with the studios
You have some wonderful stories of basically getting away with stuff at the studios.

I’d learned one very simple trick: say yes. Simply say yes. Like Joseph E. Levine, on “The Producers,” said, “The curly-haired guy—he’s funny looking. Fire him.” He wanted me to fire Gene Wilder. And I said, “Yes, he’s gone. I’m firing him.” I never did. But he forgot. After the screening of “Blazing Saddles,” the head of Warner Bros. threw me into the manager’s office, gave me a legal pad and a pencil, and gave me maybe twenty notes. He would have changed “Blazing Saddles” from a daring, funny, crazy picture to a stultified, dull, dusty old Western. He said, “No farting.” I said, “It’s out.”That’s probably the most famous scene in the movie, the campfire scene.

I know. He said, “You can’t punch a horse.” I said, “You’ll never see it again.” I kept saying, “You’re absolutely right. It’s out!” Then, when he left, I crumpled up all his notes, and I tossed it in the wastepaper basket. And John Calley, who was running [production at] Warner Bros. at the time, said, “Good filing.” That was the end of it. You say yes, and you never do it.

That’s great advice for life.

It is. Don’t fight them. Don’t waste your time struggling with them and trying to make sense to them. They’ll never understand.

It is important for all Americans to reflect on this official statement. An agency that seizes people off the street at gunpoint, into overseas prisons, refers here to a *US citizen* as "this illegal alien". The rule of law protects all of us. It protects you. That was the genius of our Framers.

Fish on Deportation in the Deep State
Eric S. Fish (University of California, Davis – School of Law) has posted Deportation in the Deep State (forthcoming, Stanford Law Review) on SSRN. Here is the abstract: Since 1997, low-level immigration agents have conducted fast-paced deportation hearings. These hearings, called Expedited Removals, circumvent the formal immigration court process. They involve an immigration agent interviewing an immigrant and deciding whether to order them deported, with no opportunity for appeal.

This is such a great encapsulation of the horror of the Tonight Show. www.currentaffairs.org/news/the-ban...
The Tonight Show is built to liquify all phenomena into content. Trump, the political reactionary and demagogue, the harbinger of a crisis, was treated not as a threat to democracy or a figure of public concern, but just another wacky celebrity guest willing to play along. Fallon and his show are not horrifying because they are malevolent, actively creating suffering in the world, but because of a thoughtless, systematic refusal to perceive any of their work as having ethical consequences. Trump’s monstrosity becomes merely eccentric, as neoliberal media packaged as entertainment normalizes a failing status quo.Illustration of Jimmy Fallon looking demonic

Huge! Supreme Court records online, for free. 1830-2019 Trial transcripts, evidence, and procedural documents that travel with each case Briefs: petitions, responses, amicus filings, and appendices submitted by litigants and by third parties Opinions for cases heard by the Supreme Court
The collection covers three kinds of materials:

The first is the official records from the lower court(s): the trial transcripts, evidence, and procedural documents that travel with each case up through the federal judiciary.
The second is the briefs: the petitions, responses, amicus filings, and supporting appendices submitted by the litigants themselves and by interested third parties. These briefs are the raw material of American constitutional argument. They capture the perspectives of individuals, corporations, civil society organizations, and government agencies pressing their cases before the nation’s highest court.
The third category is the opinions (for cases that are heard by the Supreme Court): the ultimate decisions reached by the highest court in the United States, demonstrating the logic and reasoning of the court.
