Trump only ever talks about himself and what surrounds him. The only topic he has any real knowledge of.

probably in the abstract the Trump campaign doesn't want the last week of the campaign to be a rolling series of Trumpers going on insanely racist tirades on live TV. but that is who they are, every last one of them

Holy shit this whole editorial is incredible, but especially this section.
Trump has for years maintained a discourse of contempt and misinformation against the island that reveals an obsession and disdain for a people who do not have the power of the vote to defend themselves, since the three million American citizens who live in Puerto Rico cannot vote in the presidential elections. However, the other five million who live in the United States, whom they also labeled as trash, can vote. Let’s not forget the paper towels he threw at us while we suffered without electricity for months and let’s not forget that the funds did not arrive because Trump -through the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development- told them to stop because he considered Puerto Ricans “bums who live begging.”

It is cowardly to insult those who cannot defend themselves. At Sunday’s event they not only insulted Puerto Ricans. They also insulted Latinos, blacks and women. An angry mob shouted prostitute at the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate. They also spat in front of a group of her supporters. Many were Latinos, who applauded, not understanding the consequences. One day it will be your turn.

This is the one I can’t stand. www.newyorker.com/magazine/201...
The part of the book that caused the most controversy concerns Trump's divorce from his first wife, Ivana. Hurt obtained a copy of her sworn divorce deposition, from 1990, in which she stated that, the previous year, her husband had raped her in a fit of rage.
In Hurt's account, Trump was furious that a "scalp reduction" operation he'd undergone to eliminate a bald spot had been unexpectedly painful. Ivana had recommended the plastic surgeon. In retaliation, Hurt wrote, Trump yanked out a handful of his wife's hair, and then forced himself on her sexually.
Afterward, according to the book, she spent the night locked in a bedroom, crying; in the morning, Trump asked her, "with menacing casualness, 'Does it hurt?" Trump has denied both the rape allegation and the suggestion that he had a scalp-reduction procedure. Hurt said that the incident, which is detailed in Ivana's deposition, was confirmed by two of her friends.

You are correct. I've lived in this area for years and Vancouver has always had problems with white supremacists and deeply conservative leadership. I remember when a local community college hosted a Nazi speaker (in full dress). It's a town I avoid.

For some context, Vancouver is sometimes known as Vantucky for its reputation as an Old South wannabe, complete with white supremacists, Nazis and Tea Party morons. The desperation some people have over this election is going to lead to worse, I feel. Please check on your ballots.

The massive decline in healthcare in the U.S. really scares me.
000
Distant Juxtaposition @djyoung.bsky.social · 26/10/2024
Especially if you are low-income, have kids being covered this way: what sort of recourse is there if you are given the wrong medical care or medications or can't pay the bill? Sadly, there is really no one to answer that question.

Distant Juxtaposition @djyoung.bsky.social · 26/10/2024
The people there seem to mean well, but are probably stuck in a system that promised a lot and isn't able to deliver for them, either. The healthcare system in the US is a shattered ruin and what is emerging from it doesn't seem stable or setup for the long-term. I feel this will hurt people.

After losing my HCP this past year, I've struggled to find someone else (no, the book provided by Medicare rarely brings up doctors accepting new patients, big problem), so resorted to this clinic system to get my meds filled, at least. A deal with the devil?

Distant Juxtaposition @djyoung.bsky.social · 26/10/2024
Large hospital systems are awful in so many other ways, but in OR all of them offer financial assistance and will even 'forgive' some bills if you can show financial need. It's not a complicated process, either. With these small school-based clinics (tax payer questions too), it isn't clear.

Distant Juxtaposition @djyoung.bsky.social · 26/10/2024
Aside from the question marks about an NP (nurse practitioner) directing health care decisions and writing prescriptions (presumably with an offsite MD supervising, but no communication with patients/clients), this could be a nightmare for low-income families stuck with bills there is no help for.

Distant Juxtaposition @djyoung.bsky.social · 26/10/2024
There is no one to direct financial aid queries to, save an admin assistant. The out-of-state billing company fields for hundreds if not thousands of these types of offices. Online health portals have limited functionality for communication. There is no clear sense of accountability structure.

Distant Juxtaposition @djyoung.bsky.social · 26/10/2024
One I'm seeing coming up in multiple locations and they are contracting with local high schools to house their small clinics that are directed at low-income citizens, with "sliding scale" structures. The one I've visited has trouble keeping staff, paying their bills and has no office management.

*with a decentralized billing system
000
Distant Juxtaposition @djyoung.bsky.social · 26/10/2024
Instead of a doctor providing advice and care, an NP or PA is assigned and you are billed exactly as a doctor/hospital would, similar pricing, but without a decentralized billing system out-of-state and without clear financial aid assistance. Communication is sketchy, too.

I really want to raise a big red flag about a new kind of privatized healthcare I see emerging (in Oregon, but elsewhere likely) that could be scammy as hell. More and more ppl can't access major providers so go to "urgent care" or to these cash-only setups that only offer NPs instead of MDs.

I grew up with photos like the one of a young girl covered in napalm and screaming. In high school, they showed us footage of Holocaust victims. My children play video games where they can shoot others into a bloody mush. The only thing being protected here is Israel's credibility.

The corrupt bargain Trump and Musk struck will, among other things, reward Musk financially for way overpricing Twitter and ruining the platform. We shouldn't let him turn the acquisition into a loss-leader by plunging the U.S. into fascism. www.offmessage.net/p/musk-dont-...

I have to share some of these publications innards. Apologies in advance.
Photo of one of the articles, showing a photo of Trump with the title Barring Trump From Ballots is a Recipe for Violence by Ben Shapiro. In the article he denies what happened on January 6 was an insurrection, but more will follow if Trump is not on the ballots. A photo of an ad from the publications for the 2024 Trump Calendar. From a company calling itself I Love My Freedom, it depicts a heavily photo-shopped calendar showing Trump and Melania hand in hand, smiling, making snowmen and blowing out candles on a birthday cake. Only $19.99. Another photo from the publication: Trump vs. Obama Get Ready for the Greatest Political Battle in History by Wayne Allyn Root. He describes Trump as the greatest political leader this country has ever known. He does not seem to be aware Obama is not in the running for President.

Picking up the mail is becoming a demoralizing experience. My mother won't stop ordering scrapbooking supplies from Temu and my father won't stop subscribing to this waste of ink and brain cells:
This is a photo of a glossy publication called Trending Politics: The Exclusive Publication for Proud Americans. This particular issue is a white background with a black and white drawing of Donald Trump on the cover, from February 2024. Text blow the drawing says They Can't Just Erase Trump from the Ballot...Right?Another photo of the same publication from May 2024 with Conspiracy Theory Special Edition in large letters across the front.

Seeing more footage yesterday from a burning hospital after a year of such images. There is no denying what is happening and the insult of our president not acknowledging it is baffling at best and horrifying at worst. Pressure has to keep building. There is no going back.

If you haven't, I strongly encourage everyone to be calling their senators and congresspeople and even leave messages with the White House switchboard that there must be an arms embargo against Israel. You can find who your representatives are and how to contact them at congress.gov and senate.gov.

I can't believe the kids are still talking about the movie today. We saw The Matrix last night (their first time) and they were so blow away and now in love with all of it. I'm a little worried they're going to want to see the sequels and I'd hate to see that light go out.
