Dave Vanness @djvanness.bsky.social · 14/09/2026An underdiscussed problem with the Final Rule was the prohibition on graduate students making academic program changes. Many important degree pathways (including interdisciplinary dual degrees) would be effectively banned. Glad to see the ruling address this. 063

Dave Vanness @djvanness.bsky.social · 11/09/2026"Run universities like businesses," they tell us. Well, maybe that's why people are starting to think of higher ed like this... www.insidehighered.com/news/governm... Data source: news.gallup.com/poll/1597/co... Dave Vanness @djvanness.bsky.social · 30/04/2026The caption for the photo is weird... Seems to imply that the fries and guacamole are the ultra processed foods, and the salad is the healthy meal. Sure, fries and guac are hardly healthy options, but they certainly aren't ultra processed (unless we're talking weird engineered Sysco pub fries). 120
Dave Vanness @djvanness.bsky.social · 18/04/2026So, legislation from the bench is bad, unless you're the conservative majority. Did I get that right? 041

Dave Vanness @djvanness.bsky.social · 31/03/2026FYI - I think your tag slightly misinterprets the results. The 3% increase was for all food away from home (FAFH), which includes both fast food and full service restaurants. When they decompose the prices, they find it increased fast food prices by closer to 5%. 1131

Dave Vanness @djvanness.bsky.social · 18/03/2026Interesting interview with Cal Newport on AI in #highered. This paragraph glosses over a key concern: RAship provide vital learning experience for our grad students. Their replacement by AI creates a huge learning gap and reduces funding opportunities for students. www.chronicle.com/article/is-a... 061
Dave Vanness @djvanness.bsky.social · 26/02/2026"Friends" is a beloved American sitcom that aired from 1994 to 2004, following six young adults—Rachel, Ross, Monica, Chandler, Joey, and Phoebe—living in New York City. The show explores their friendships, romances, careers, and personal growth over ten seasons. 010

Dave Vanness @djvanness.bsky.social · 07/02/2026Other interesting avenues to track down - how students perceive their own performance under competitive norm-based grading (also from Liu, Wong and Hard 2024): 000
Dave Vanness @djvanness.bsky.social · 07/02/2026More papers to track down suggesting empirical evidence on competition (from Liu, Wong and Hard 2024): 100
Dave Vanness @djvanness.bsky.social · 07/02/2026This is prompting me more to learn about the literature in this area. Norm-based grading (grading according to distributions rather than criteria) affects student perceptions negatively compared to criterion-based grading (Liu, Wong and Hard 2024) 200

Dave Vanness @djvanness.bsky.social · 23/12/2025There's lots of things to criticize Jay Bhattacharya for, but to say he has never conducted NIH-funded research is incorrect, as a search of NIH RePORTER clearly shows: 040
Dave Vanness @djvanness.bsky.social · 22/12/2025Deleted this post. 0.3% of $100,000 is $300, not $30. Still a shockingly small price to pay to eliminate extreme poverty. But don't want incorrect information out there... Not enough coffee yet! 171
Dave Vanness @djvanness.bsky.social · 06/12/2025True, but large n does not unbias a study with substantial unmeasured confounders. Likely some of the effect is direct (most interesting finding is that the effect wanes over time as COVID-related mortality wanes), but much likely runs through SES, as the authors were careful to note: 100
