Nobody could engage in the sectarian rhetoric of imagined revolutionary purity more than the 4th International Trotskyist splinter groups, like the so-called Workers Revolutionary Party in the UK or the Spartacist League in the US.

In this panel, the contributors return to Sterne’s critique of the basic conceptual precepts and historical foundation of Canadian medium theory’s “Great Divide” in order to critically assess its enduring legacy

010

Andrew Herman 🇨🇦 🇺🇸 🍊 @djouroboros.bsky.social · 18/08/2026

Yet, in spite of the evident deficiencies of the Great Divide’s problematique, it continues to have a seductive appeal for many critical observers of our contemporary social media landscape.

000

Andrew Herman 🇨🇦 🇺🇸 🍊 @djouroboros.bsky.social · 18/08/2026

Sterne distils these differences into what he termed the “audiovisual litany”, a list of seemingly incorrigible oppositions (e.g., hearing is spherical, vision is directional; hearing immerses, vision distances; etc) that have hardened into a medium theory orthodoxy that is problematic.

000

Andrew Herman 🇨🇦 🇺🇸 🍊 @djouroboros.bsky.social · 18/08/2026

For Sterne, the antipodean poles of orality and literacy are contingent upon a particular rendering of the distinctive phenomenological dimensions of sound and vision, hearing and seeing, that are determined by material properties of their specific media forms and communicative practices.

000

Andrew Herman 🇨🇦 🇺🇸 🍊 @djouroboros.bsky.social · 18/08/2026

What has recently been termed the “Great Divide” between orality and literacy (Thompson, 2026), has its roots in the mid-20th-century work of the “Toronto School” of communication, with the key figures in promulgating the orality/literacy binary being Marshall McLuhan and Walter Ong.

000

Andrew Herman 🇨🇦 🇺🇸 🍊 @djouroboros.bsky.social · 18/08/2026

One of the many ways in which Sterne made an enduring contribution to cultural theory and media history in general was to critically interrogate the conceptualisation of “orality” and “literacy” as radically and homogenously distinct media ecologies or environments.

000

Andrew Herman 🇨🇦 🇺🇸 🍊 @djouroboros.bsky.social · 18/08/2026

This panel seeks to honour the magnificent intellectual spirit of the late Jonathan Sterne at SCMS in Montreal, his longtime home before his untimely passing.

Andrew Herman 🇨🇦 🇺🇸 🍊 @djouroboros.bsky.social · 18/08/2026

Communication Studies peeps: We are seeking a fourth person to round out a 2027 SCMS panel in honour of Jonathan Sterne. The panel is provisionally entitled Revisiting Jonathan Sterne and the Great Divide: Orality, Literacy, and the Vicissitudes of (Canadian) Medium Theory.
