Ah yes, perhaps the most beloved literary trope of all: the classic McMuffin
A screenshot that reads: Moore throws in a Hitchcock-style McMuffin in the shape of a secret tape recording which will reveal just who has been betraying the gangsters.
The problem is that no-one has a machine on which to play it.

whenever trump's DOJ has to go in front of a judge to get yelled at, every lawyer on here is like "omg i've NEVER seen a judge this mad, if a judge yelled at me like this i'd immediately commit seppeku," and then at the end of the hearing the judge is like "ok no sanctions just don't do it again"

This Guardians thing is getting to the point where even when I get back from Spain I may need to be asleep during all their games to keep the win streak going.

I mean for a solid decade a huge, easy legislative W has been “stop the incessant goddamn spam calls that cause no one to answer their phones ever” and nobody in charge of anything has ever even suggested solving it so this seems like a long shot.

Thankfully this horse in Seville today seemed to know how to navigate this big street with cars on its own because the driver was not helping.
A photo of a beautiful white horse and carriage going down a large street in Seville, Spain. A leafy park is across the street in the background. Two people in the carriage are looking around them. The driver is looking at his phone and completely not paying attention.

Kind of on the spur of the moment I have managed a ticket to tonight’s Real Madrid home game against Villarreal. My first in-person European soccer game at the Bernabeu. I’m kind of insanely excited.

Our next story will be a much more recent 13th Dr episode, "Can You Hear Me?", which takes place at least partly in 1300s Syria. Apparently, at least, I have absolutely no memory of this despite it having aired in 2020. #DoctorWho 📺

The Doctor proceeds to lose the TARDIS to Kublai Khan in a game of backgammon, but then he and the gang take it back in the confusion caused by a final swordfight (it sounded cool) between Marco Polo and the bad guy and leave pretty abruptly. #DoctorWho 📺

The last two episodes take place mostly in the court of Kublai Khan (Martin Miller), who is portrayed as plagued by gout and becomes friends with the Doctor over their mutual enfeeblement (the Doctor having back problems is a major plot point here). #DoctorWho 📺

In the 2nd episode there's a sequence where everyone is caught up in a sandstorm in the Gobi Desert and, perhaps because all I was really getting was the sound, it felt incredibly intense and freakout-worthy. #DoctorWho 📺

But beyond this, the story is a fun travelogue through what's presented as a beautiful and advanced civilization. And while it's a bit hard to tell without the actual video, the exciting parts feel genuinely exciting. #DoctorWho 📺

In the midst of this one character, the sympathetic Ping Cho who becomes friends with Barbara, is a played by an actual Asian person, Zienia Merton, who was born in Burma. For the most part not even much of effort is made to make the white people look Chinese. It can be a weird vibe. #DoctorWho 📺

While the story is dramatic and for the most part well-written, whether you'll especially enjoy it may come down to the serial's cardinal sin, which is that it includes very few actual Asian people and casts white British guys as characters like a Mongol Warlord and Kublai Khan himself. #DoctorWho 📺

I watched a series of "reconstructions" of the story, from a few different sources on YouTube. It is 7 episodes long but unlike "The Daleks" didn't drag for me, partly because, by the nature of the story, they keep coming to new settings and environments. #DoctorWho 📺

Taking place only a few years later, though in a very different setting, is our next story, "Marco Polo." It is something of a legend among #DoctorWho fans, both because at the time it was considered one of the best of the 1st Dr "Historicals" and because it was subsuquently completely lost. 📺

In the end the Sontaran is shot by Irongron, resulting in his falling onto the controls and blowing up the castle and everybody in it, except conveniently for our heroes and all the scientists. Overall a good time if not the heights of the series' excitement. #DoctorWho 📺

The Sontaran Jinx spends much of the story in an uneasy alliance with a band of medieval ruffians occupying a small castle, led by "Irongron." They are generally useless. One of them is named "Bloodaxe." #DoctorWho 📺

Daniel Joslyn @djoslyn.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
The Sontarans are for the most part taken seriously here, though their bombastic demeanor, sort of potato-ey shape, and small-to-medium stature have resulted in them more often (but not always) being played for comedy in New Who. #DoctorWho 📺

Sarah at first thinks the Doctor is behind the whole thing, but eventually changes her mind and helps him stop the bad guys. She also tries unsuccessfully to introduce feminism to medieval England. "You should stop letting the men treat you like slaves!" "We are slaves." #DoctorWho 📺

In contrast to some less-useful Companions, Sarah Jane is very much the Intrepid Journalist, stowing away in the TARDIS back to 1275. The script gets a lot of mileage out of continuing to think she's in the midst of some sort of historical reenactment for most of an episode. #DoctorWho 📺

Daniel Joslyn @djoslyn.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
The story itself is pretty fun, though by budgetary constraints mostly limited to about three locations. It is set off by the Sontaran stealing scientists from modern-day UNIT (the Brigadier is in about two scenes, making I believe his first appearance in our rewatch). #DoctorWho 📺

Interestingly, it is also the first time the planet the Doctor is from, Gallifrey, is officially named (he casually namedrops it during a conversation with the Sontaran). Gallifrey would of course become a huge part of Who mythology over the years. #DoctorWho 📺

This story is perhaps best known today for its many big introductions to the series. Most obviously, it is the debut of Sarah Jane, probably the most popular of the classic Companions, as well as the introduction of the Sontarans, who remain recurring villains to this day. #DoctorWho 📺

We continue our Chrononological #DoctorWho watch with "The Time Warrior," in which the 3rd Doctor (Jon Pertwee), with some help from Sarah Jane Smith (Elisabeth Sladen), saves 1275 England from a crashed Sontaran giving them guns in exchange for helping him fix his ship. 📺

Horrortober #3: The Hitcher (1986) C. Delightful also to hear real eagle noises. In movies eagles are always dubbed with hawks, since hawks found fierce and eagles sound like adorable squeakers.
