Building a pro-human rights/anti-genocide coalition that doesn't go through these headbangers, or anyone that can be confused for them, means finding ways of bringing even more reticent coalition members on board.

It's incredibly frustrating that these freaks cannot be part of a winning coalition and even more frustrating that there's no way of distinguishing them from actual pro-Palestine/anti-genocide people.

In general the marginal £s spent don't have a huge impact, and Reform don't have a hugely rational operation. The issue, in my view, is the access that the money buys, even though the money isn't actually that useful.

Definitely prefer ethnic groups to racial groups, so out of the two, I'd say 'ethnic groups' are best.

Yeah yeah yeah this is probably diagnosable. I have several battles to fight with the NHS for treatment and I don't have any bandwidth for another.

I get crazy anxiety about committing to a new series because of the emotional effect that scheduling and watching episodes can have. It's honestly kinda a relief when I dislike or am so-so on a series.

If only Lambeth had something like a giant office block being built outside the Tube station they could ransack for money to build these docks! Alas. I'm sure the giant pile of Limes and Forests is worth it.

Bender @djbthirteen.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
The pile of dockless bikes around Brixton station could be cut substantially by building a dock outside the station and a few strategically placed docks up the road to Tulse Hill and Streatham.

Bender @djbthirteen.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
If London boroughs want to reduce the pressure on dockless bike parking around tube stations, they'd do well to reexamine their attitudes towards docked bike parking.

Any answer other than punting to the provider/venue raises the salience of the issue, which is bad both for centre-left politicians and trans rights. The correct answer ethically is that trans exclusion is unacceptable, but that's not a goer legislatively until there's a widespread consensus.
000
Bender @djbthirteen.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
The correct answer (politically) to all of these questions on trans inclusion is that it's down to the service provider/venue. (At least until a widespread consensus is established that trans exclusion is unacceptable discrimination).

Obviously this is flippant and it's very concerning that the person responsible for proposing government legislation on this holds this view (slash, thinks she needs to pretend to hold this view to appease a bunch of Elon-Twitter brain poisoned journos).

MPs have to declare second jobs so it's concerning that she's moonlighting as a security guard without public declaration.

Unusually late! Lots of cafés close at 5pm or 6pm. Some even close as early as mid-afternoon. England just sucks. London is better on average.

SimCity 3000 is a janky and awkward game to play but the flavour and humour is unsurpassed. I'm sad no one has made a similarly characterful and silly city builder.

Yeah I agree. I think the BBC made a bad call censoring the sketches. I don't think it's unreasonable to think they're racist sketches, but the critique of the M&W sketches of that they're failed anti-racism, whereas the LB/CFwM sketches, the critique is they they're just racist.

Whilst your point is in general true, a few asterisks apply in both directions, including the fact that Mitchell & Webb have been re-released for streaming without their blackface sketches.

Crazy the impact that show had. There's at least half a dozen memes still in popular circulation. Compare to Little Britain and Catherine Tate, which had much bigger immediate impact but now mostly cited as examples of 'things that happened in the naughties' rather than relevant stuff to now.

I've actually just given up. If I think a park will be a safe and reasonable place to cycle, I just go there with a bike and follow the prevailing behaviour of other cyclists. Down every other path leads madness.

Bender @djbthirteen.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Ah! A list of written instructions. Now time to just painstakingly compare these to Google Maps to work out which paths they refer to.

Ah! An email address... Should I just try asking? Oh no, just got five paragraphs of semi-legal nonsense back, possibly from an LLM, and no clear answer.

Ah! A by-law from 2015! There has been one amendment to it, but that seems to pertain only to the King's Geese (which may be a pub that closed?) so I think it's valid.

Bender @djbthirteen.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Ah! A map! This one's from 2004, and the park has only undergone one major landscaping project since then, perhaps this will be useful.

That's the market signal to prioritise development in the areas that can bear extra costs. That's the system working!
000
Bender @djbthirteen.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Tesco are charged a flat levy and it all goes to the Chancellor to distribute to the things the government needs to do. We should just set a flat fee on all development, whether it's someone building new homes or someone extending to allow for a bigger family, and spend it on things we need.
100
Bender @djbthirteen.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
The YIMBY solution to this should be a flat levy. Tesco cause negative externalities when they sell ready meals. We don't respond with a council-by-council negotiation on exactly which health programmes they'll fund and how much.

Anyway, with party conference season entering its final stages, here's the respective 'three word description' bubble charts for each of the five major party leaders, together in one place for the first time.

Interesting! Suspect it's also the flattery. It's easier to believe someone who says you're wrong when they're complimentary about every other aspect of what you're saying.

† German-style mixed and Scottish-style mixed are different systems and if you think otherwise you're too invested in the system formulae and not invested enough in actual outcomes.

Bender @djbthirteen.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
I strongly suspect what will pop out looks a lot like the Scottish electoral system. It's not my first choice (I'm a Dutch-style list purist) but it's better than the status quo. That said, if what pops out is Irish-style STV, Welsh-style list or German-style mixed†, I shan't be shocked.

Bender @djbthirteen.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
The Government need to admit, internally, that what's needed is a party political stitch-up. They need to get the parties (that might plausibly agree to share a common platform on electoral reform) to negotiate something, then all agree it'll be their manifesto commitment.
100
Bender @djbthirteen.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Ultimately the success of a commission into electoral systems will depend on being able to sell the outcome to Labour, the Lib Dems, the Greens, the SNP, Plaid and possibly the SDLP and Alliance. Those parties marching in lockstep with the same messages (tailored to their audiences) is the key.

Bender @djbthirteen.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
The experts are much more versed in the unresolved back-and-forth arguments about different democratic theories. But, there are also experts who are also very good at communicating these ideas and debates, and there's no reason why a selection of centre & left party leaders can't fully understand.
100
Bender @djbthirteen.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
The public are largely uneducated on democratic theory. The idea that we can rapidly upskill 100 of them just means that we're largely just telling them whatever the selected experts already think.
100
Bender @djbthirteen.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
The third very silly thing is the suggestion that the panel of experts or members of the public have some wisdom about democratic theory that politicians lack.
100
Bender @djbthirteen.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
The existence of a panel of members of the public are trivially easily dismissed as a fix, or self-selecting. It is absurd to claim that they act as a prophylactic against claims of an elite centre/left stitch up.
100
Bender @djbthirteen.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
The brief era where a small number of TV channels broadcast full-spectrum news is over. We have gone back to the normal way of doing things where people exist in their own information ecosystems. If the right decides it wants to delegitimise the recommended outcome, it will.
100
Bender @djbthirteen.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
The second very silly thing that's being said is that we need a panel of members of the public to build public legitimacy for the outcome. The people saying this must not have been paying any attention to our information ecosystem for the last twenty years.
100
Bender @djbthirteen.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Electoral systems are not some obscure policy area where a bunch of ivory tower academics have hoarded knowledge like dragons. This is an area where many people are actively working on communicating this stuff in a way that an ordinary policy officer can understand.
100
Bender @djbthirteen.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
The totality of knowledge about the impact of different electoral systems is mostly already in formats where an averagely competent policy officer can digest it. The knowledge that hasn't already been processed into digestible reports can easily be conveyed with expert testimony.
100
Bender @djbthirteen.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
The first very silly thing is the idea that experts are needed to establish the impacts of different electoral systems. Experts already know the maximum amount that can be known about the impacts of all realistic options.
