An important thing to note in this period of fascism is that fascists are historically not good at government. Their entire shtick is "oh yeah? Well that's so-and-so's fault." Actual governance requires you to have a solution that is not "well let's fuck those marginalized guys up."

My kids have always made jokes about unfinished freeway ramps, which AFAICT would be the only place on the road where such a car would be useful. (Traffic barriers also work though.)
An unfinished freeway overpass in Portland, Oregon. The ramp just stops with the end of the roadway a good 40 feet above the ground below.

The site abovewas shared with me yesterday by this dedicated protestor who was out in the rain in a terrifying inflatable costume depicting Elon pulling the strings of Mike Rogers.
An inflatable of Elon Musk. "Strings" (actually metal poles) run down to a big check made out to Mike Rogers and signed by Elon Musk, along with the memo line: "You owe me." The protestor with the inflatable Musk is wearing a mask with the face of Mike Rogers.

This site tracks how much the founder of Tesla etc. has donated to various candidates. At the time I'm posting, the top three are: $23.7 M to Paxton (TX), $7.7 M to Husted (OH), and $6.2 M to Rogers (MI). muskmoneywatch.com

Abdul is an absolutely EXCEPTIONAL speaker. He really knows how to hold a crowd, while also getting across important points. Vote Abdul!! (My ballot already went in a couple of days ago, and yes, I voted for him.)

The only thing I didn't like about the @abdulelsayed.bsky.social rally tonight is that I almost lost my voice screaming... Got a great seat in row 3 (by standing in line more than an hour before the doors opened). Great view of AOC & Abdul speaking!

My classes are designed to have collaborative bits. Think about this; check in with a neighbor. OR, get together in small groups and brainstorm how you can apply past skills we've covered to the new topic. Or...you get the picture. These activities are so much more difficult in a lecture hall.

I teach the same lecture every semester. For some reason, in the first semester it's scheduled in a collaborative learning classroom, while in the second semester it's scheduled in a lecture hall. (Class is capped at 36; the lecture hall holds 120.)

I don't teach gen chem labs. There are genuine analytical issues that pop up from time to time that I only learn b/c I've taught the same lab a gazillion times. A grad student could not do what I do with the same level of helpfulness to students.

I have been told (by someone in a department with grad students): "Your problem is that you guys don't have a grad program. You'd have more time if you could offload your labs onto grad students."

One fun thing about being in the faculty union is you get to hear what administration tells the STEM faculty and what they tell the humanities faculty. Turns out we're both too expensive and costing the university money and can't be afforded. Just for completely opposite and contradictory reasons.

Also, while it was the financial situation at my last school that pushed me over the edge, I'd been considering leaving for years prior to that--specifically because I felt devalued on a regular basis. So this all rings very true to me.

I am tired and really should go home now (the rest of the work I have to do today can absolutely be done in a more comfortable environment). But I am too exhausted to get out of my chair. So instead, I will post a couple of pictures of my dog from yesterday's walk.
A happy dog runs along a pathway covered in dead leaves. His floppy ears have flopped up, his mouth is open in a wide smile, and his tongue is sticking out.A dog runs along a leaf-covered pathway in an autumn forest. His mouth is open in a doggy grin.

I have never been anywhere in Detroit other than the airport and its immediate environs. I should probably fix that some time. (To anyone who doesn't know Michigan: I may live in the same state, but I am an 8-hour drive from Detroit. I really live out in the sticks.)

If I lived there permanently I would have sold my car and saved the $. (I was there as a term prof and knew I'd be out in a year or two.) I can't think of anywhere else where I could have gotten away without a car. I could *almost* do it in Denver, but not quite.

NGL, NYC is expensive as FUCK. I was a single mom when I lived there and WHEW. OTOH, I didn't have to worry about taking Youngest to his extracurriculars b/c he could take transit. We could walk to groceries/restaurants/etc. We had a big park within a few blocks. Quick transit to work + airports.

Denver beats Seattle (for now) because of better public transit. I may feel differently after Seattle finishes expanding their light rail. (I don't care how many amenities a city has if you can't get to them easily.)

For allies—I also take today to ask you to consider two things: One, while "when did you come out" usually means "when did you start telling people?" understand that it never ends. Every single time we meet someone new, we have to do the same math: Is this person/situation/place safe? Every time.
