My paper, "The Problem of Punishing International Crimes through Immigration Law" is out in the @refugeesurveyquart.bsky.social. It shows how allegations of genocide have led to harsh sentences for immigration fraud & low evidentiary thresholds for determining asylum applications as inadmissible.

Today, the European parliament is likely to approve rules that would make it easier to deport rejected asylum seekers including to countries they have no connection to. This reform of the Return Regulation is a compromise backed by the centre and far right.

Last week’s vote reflects a challenging new paradigm for policymaking on migration, a mounting securitisation of migration and attacks on migrant rights. This comes alongside a shrinking willingness or ability across EU institutions to resist pressure from member states on short-termist policies that will harm people, sow fear in communities, and result in rights violations, enormous costs, and lengthy litigation.
