These wrongs will keep happening until we stop treating them as single incidents, start seeing the systemic pattern, and encourage those rare organizations that have chosen correctly.

All this to say: state institutions have always had the option to choose better. Except the rare exception, they consistently choose wrong.

Dr. Chelsea Gray @divingwsharks.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
But they didn't have to tell me their policy change. They didn’t have to update me. They gave me more than the institution that still actively benefits from my work and achievements.

Dr. Chelsea Gray @divingwsharks.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
They chose correctly out of ethics, and I'm sure a but of a PR concern (bad look to fund grad students suspended for misconduct).

Dr. Chelsea Gray @divingwsharks.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
And I should add, I was not a member to that org during or before the Title IX investigation. I was not a party they had to care about at all.
100
Dr. Chelsea Gray @divingwsharks.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
So small. But it literally moved me from being traumatized by their logo, to volunteering my time as a professional for them.
100
Dr. Chelsea Gray @divingwsharks.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
MONTHS LATER they emailed me their new policy, that required funding recipients disclose misconduct findings at work/school (the list included sexual misconduct). This is what I had recommended in my public statements.
100
Dr. Chelsea Gray @divingwsharks.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
The org found out about me, due to statements I made publicly, statements neither that named the org or assailant. But, small world. Then... they reached out to me privately. Said they were reviewing policies.
100
Dr. Chelsea Gray @divingwsharks.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
In our Title IX case, my assailant utilized photos taken for social media by/for this org as evidence of his value to our campus community.
100
Dr. Chelsea Gray @divingwsharks.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
They heavily utilized his image in advertising, social media, etc, to my trauma. I couldn't apply to this org for funding, knowing it would require me to attend events with him. This was also a major funder/network in both our fields.
100
Dr. Chelsea Gray @divingwsharks.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
An organization that funded my assailant (using taxpayer money) was HORRIFIED to find out they were funding him and having him speak at events WHILE SUSPENDED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT

So many administrators think doing *anything* wont matter. But I have a counter factual:
100
Dr. Chelsea Gray @divingwsharks.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
Or the attitude of admin that my trauma was "unfixable" so "why ruin his life" (an attitude I intuited the same year Bedera was conducting her research, but couldn't validate), I might've behaved differently

Dr. Chelsea Gray @divingwsharks.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
I searched for such research when deciding to report (didn't exist at the time), but had I known about the strategy of "running out the clock"

Dr. Chelsea Gray @divingwsharks.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
As someone who was failed by Title IX in grad school, and who tried to bring my concerns to my university (they didn't care), I cannot emphasize enough how valuable research by @nbedera.bsky.social is

I would also like to say go raibh maith agaibh (thank you) to the @irishbaskingshark.bsky.social and the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group for supplying the sightings data that were used to validate the model.

Most importantly, this shows that an IBM can realistically replicate basking shark behaviour.
110
Dr. Chelsea Gray @divingwsharks.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Food alone, social attraction alone and random movement rarely produced groups larger than two. Basking shark aggregations emerge from a combination of environmental and social drivers, not food or chance alone.
110
Dr. Chelsea Gray @divingwsharks.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Key finding: across three decades of sightings data from the Irish Basking Shark Group and the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group, the submodel in which sharks sought both food and each other produced the most realistic results.

Dr. Chelsea Gray @divingwsharks.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Interested in developing or experimenting with IBMs for basking sharks? Great news: the model is freely available in the supplementary material, and I'd love to chat with anyone who has questions or ideas!

It's the first individual-based model (IBM) of basking sharks, built around the Inishowen Peninsula in Donegal, Ireland. This first iteration lays the groundwork, and I see enormous potential for new developments, collaborations and experimental modelling.

Only 53% of the total area of KBAs is covered by protected and conserved areas, revealing significant gaps in safeguarding critical habitats. More work is needed to conserve comprehensive networks of sites that support species throughout their migratory cycles. ➡️ www.cms.int/publication/...

132 countries and the EU have signed the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS), which has been in force since 1979. By bringing countries together, supporting research, and coordinating conservation efforts across Range States, CMS helps safeguard migratory wildlife and their habitats. #CMSCOP15
