Have hit the “huh, I’ve never watched Nosferatu” stage of grief and insomnia. I don’t think I’ve watched a silent movie since I was uni, but I don’t want to be either asleep or awake, dramatic vampires will do nicely.
Title card for the movie Nosferatu, white text on black background “Doesn’t the name sound like the very midnight call of death? Speak it not aloud or life’s pictures will turn to pale shadows, and nightmares will rise up to FEED ON YOUR BLOOD”. 1920s drama, I guess

Behold! I love this frog so much, this deck is so much fun to look at. And it’s hilarious when the BBC are is cute and the message is like “nope”
Cartoons of tarot cards. The hermit, 7 of swords, hanged man, the fool, 10 of cups and devil. They all feature cartoon frogs, giant mice, tiny fairies, toadstools and psychedelic colours.

My sassiest is based off Rider-Waite, but has cute/LSD 70s vibes. I get sassed by frogs and fairies 😭😭 Can’t wait to see how uh the OG pack goes 🫠
Seven of wands tarot card showing a giant cartoon frog with mismatched socks fighting against wands. It’s giving 1970s illustration vibes

This has been a rough week, symptoms-wise, and I’ve been mostly bedbound and sad about it. Today these beauts arrived from @oldenoughtosay.com and massively cheered me up. Thanks so much!

Made a couple of fake tarot cards (along with descriptions) for a friend. Yes, the second one is a hedgehog on a roomba, because silly things rock.
Basic drawing of a fake tarot card featuring a middle finger floating over a field. It’s called the Ace of Fucks. Fake home made tarot card called the hedgehog. A purple cartoon hedgehog is hanging out on a room a, surrounded by bright wiggly patches of colour.

Low effort/cost eclipse-watching gear likely won’t work but in more exciting news I have made it outside on eclipse day! And secured the one sunny patch that is not full of youngsters with the proper glasses.

OMG I love this artist! We have one of their cards on our fridge.

So excited that @sachacoward.bsky.social ‘s book, Queer As Folklore has arrived in time for Christmas. Thanks @thecommonpress.bsky.social! This will make my housebound Christmas very cosy and folklorish and 😀🐉🧚‍♀️🦄🏳️‍🌈
A photo of the cover of Queer As Folklore. It’s bright yellow with red and black lettering and features a merman with wings, a narwhal horn in the style of 1950s tattoos. It looks cheerful and queer AF.

Bluesky buddies who are into tarot/witchy stuff (I’m thinking @srslymagenta.bsky.social but really anyone), if you happened upon a cute oracle deck in your wardrobe without a booklet, how would you use it? Asking for a me cos look how pretty these are.

A kindred spirit! From The Upstairs Delicatessen: on Eating, Reading, Reading about Eating, and Eating While Reading by Dwight Garner. Text from image is in alt text.
“Reading and eating, like Krazy and Ignatz, Sturm und drank, prosciutto and melon, Simon and Schuster, and radishes and butter, have always, for me, simply gone together. The book you’re holding is a (‘cry for help’ is crossed out) product of these combined gluttonies. While reading, I’m helpless: I always a) wish I were eating b) notice the food.”

The female gaze
Cartoon fox version of Robin Hood casually leaning against a tree, wearing a green tunic and a slutty little yellow hat with a feather and arrow in it. He’s checking out his nails while delivering a sick burn. All we want is a kind, flirty man who’ll dismantle capitalism with us.

The aforementioned goat, and some bird friends without context in a fake kitchen because why not? To be fair, this museum is also doing great decolonisation work, so extra reasons to go.
A stuffed goat with super curly horns. It is wearing a light blue sweater and looking confused about the meaning of life.A stuffed crow and another bird (maybe a hawk) perched on a silver rubbish bin in front of a fake oven as part of a museum exhibit. Your guess is as good as mine.

There is nothing quite like belting the words to Depeche Mode’s Personal Jesus at a disco in a cathedral.
A multicoloured window in a cathedral. The walls are lit in blue and a ribbon of rainbow light crosses the middle of the picture. The word “Incredible” on a backlit sign, below a rainbow swoop of laser light and smoke Interior of a cathedral lit with purple and pink lights above a crowd of people dancing with headphones. The window is bathed in soft neon orange and contrasts with the walls.

You know you’re a special kind of nerd when you spend your Friday night sitting in the sunny patch of the lounge reading the first book of War and Peace… but the Bogan translation because tutira mai ngā iwi. It’s a hoot so far, highly, highly recommend.
A screenshot of the intro to War and Peace into Bogan. It starts with “Bloody hell, Prince Vasili, Genoa and Luca are pretty much just Napoleon’s holiday homes now… I’m warning you, if you still reckon Napoleon is an alright bloke - if you still don’t reckon this means he wants a fight - if you try and defend that mad bastard, who I reckon is pretty much the devil… well, then you can bugger off, we’re not mates anymore. But Oi, come in, come in, I’m just messing with ya mate. Sit down. How are ya, anyway?”

I know these fullas are stadium-fillers back home, but one benefit of being overseas is seeing bands like Drax Project in wee venues (and randomly shaking the drummer’s hand after the show 🤣). The nicest dudes ever and far out they *bring it*. Incredible energy from the band and the crowd.
Drax Project live on stage with red lights around them. The guitarist is on the left and wearing a white shirt, the lead singer is playing a sax whilst wearing the band’s tour shirt, the drummer’s head is just behind him because I’m too short to get good pics, and the keyboardist, like all staunch kiwi blokes, is head to toe in black with a cap on his head. They’re vibing.

No, Marmite from NZ is a different product from the UK version, much stronger and thicker.

Sensible me: I should do some life admin tonight. Inner me: But SUN! And these books! I can read bits of ALL THREE and be super cosy, look at me goooo! Guess which me won. (My reading technique is a wee bit slutty. I tend to have 4 or 5 on the go and dip in and out depending on mood. Why not?).
Three books in dappled sunlight. One has a photograph of a coke can and is a biography about a woman’s childhood in Albania when communism ended; one is neon yellow and pink and features Shakespeare posing like he’s on a dating app; the third is red with detailed patterns, pictures of Indian buildings and a blue margin.

Came home from a crap day at work to find this balcony flag had arrived and then stumbled upon the sweary, deliciously crass glory of Lucille Bogan’s music (featuring stella lines like “if you lick my 🐱 I’ll suck your 🍆”). Love that we have recorded proof our ancestors were horny as fuck 😂

My Indie Bookstore Day treat for myself. In between seeing morris dancers and going to a ceilidh I started it at a local restaurant. I need to take myself on cute little solo dates more often, there is nothing like sitting at a pavement bar with a book on a warm spring evening.
Book with a bright pink cover and purple drink on a scratch up table. Shakespeare is posing on the cover as if he’s a hipster in an indie band. The title reads Straight Acting, the many queer lives of William Shakespeare by Will Tosh. To the right is a cute lil tumbler of a purple cocktail with 3 big chonks of ice, it tastes like slowly unwinding after a long week.

Trying to make onigiri because it’s one of my fave snacks when I travel through Singapore and I need a fun little food thing. Notes to future me: make a wee divot in the rice to cram in more fillings; my poor gift wrapping skills extends to onigiri; too much wasabi can also be the right amount.
Flat lay of ingredients for onigiri: wasabi, shredded carrot, salmon, two plastic spoons for scooping rice, two yellow triangular moulds (satisfyingly fun to use), and a light blue bowl with rice, sitting on top of nori seaweed sheets. Onigiri sitting in the far end of a handmade bowl like a sports bro lazing in a sauna. The bottom of the onigiri is covered in seaweed like a cheeky towel and there’s a wibbly ribbon of wasabi on top. The bowl has cute 1950s pink and blue spangles on it.

What’s your sign?
A whisky menu, small sign and whiskey cocktail on an outdoor table on a summer’s day. The sign has 1920s silent film vibes and reads “The Last Word: whisky & cock lunge” in fancy white lettering on a black background. It’s meant to say “cocktail lounge” but locals creatively scratched out some letters.

Me: I need to stop buying books for a few months, save some money. Local op shops: Hold our bookmarks. January is long, but happily, so is my TBR pile 😌
Three books on a table. From left to right; Mrs Spring Fragrance which has a jaunty pink cover; I am Radar which has a black and white line drawing of a house boat in the foreground and palm trees in the background; My Other Life which has a black and white grainy close up of a bloke’s face. He’s wearing sunglasses and one lense shows a sepia image of 3 Malawian boys in front of huts.

Since I’ve been ranting a lot lately, have some spooky snow pics from my lunch time walks.
A marina on a grey foggy day. In the middle is a slightly slanted line of trees reflected in the water. An almost completely grey photo with a small row of red houses and trees on the right, reflected in the water. On the left a line stretches across the water behind two yellow buoys. White background, with a park bench and wintry trees covered in snow. Behind the park bench is a grey river. Medieval red brick house covered in snow, with fancy tiny green box hedges and trees in front. The middle of the house is black and white timber and slightly wonky.

Most of my English mates have doubted the existence of feijoas, but here is proof of their absolute god-like status in Te Wāi Pounamu. I’ve got fond memories of drunkenly bonding with a Chilean woman at a New Years’ party over feijoas and surviving long distance flights; they’re that good 😄

First day of the trip without chores or scheduled hang outs: time for slug mode. I’m going to read my bestie’s gift, The House on the Cerulean Sea. There’s a long, dull story about why this book took a year to arrive (courtesy of NZ Post and Royal Snail), but it’s just added to the anticipation.

Today’s protest poster: solidarity on the front, bluntness on the back. Lessons learned: these colours apply to anti-fascism/racism protests AND pro-Palestine protests, but next time I’ll chuck it on a stick for ease of handling. Was such a lovely protest and a wide variety of peeps showing up.
