Only slightly related, but I remember visiting my uncle after his thumb was sheared off in an industrial accident and there was a jar of leeches beside his bed. They're great for keeping the larger blood vessels open to enable reattachment due to the anticoagulants they produce.

It would also skew the viewer into thinking that Rachel is merely another in a long line of women he's romanced rather than his child. I think the first time I saw it it was the US edit and then on the second viewing (of an uncut version) I realised what their relationship ACTUALLY was.
