I don’t think I’m ever going to get the appeal of pivoting to video for podcasts. I’ve been listening to podcasts for 20 years, and never once have I thought, my God, I need to SEE these people! I’m on a walk or doing the dishes, I don’t need video.

Thank you - I do love print but the artwork really pops on these versions.

I love seeing these classics jump off the page freed of smudged half tones and blurred edges. Is this from a particular classic collection?

I’d love to see where the voice actors’ contracts freely allow this little wheeze.

Here’s hopefully a comforting reply - most awards are bought as much as won - entry fees / advertising campaigns / membership fees. Winning awards is great but it’s not the be all and end all. Making work you are proud of is a pretty good reward in itself.

You jest but people weren’t just given spot fx jobs on those programmes. There was a skill in even the most straightforward-seeming production.

Tbh Radio/Audio has always been treated as a poor relation which is ironic given how powerful an imaginative tool it really is, the amount of skill it requires to excel at and how much more fun it is to work in than the grievously over subscribed visual media.

From The Times obit for Esther Rantzen. Nothing against Ms Rantzen but us dogsbodies trained for 9 months to “do the chores” and would like to see the obit writer survive “Red Light Fever” and operate the panel in a busy studio live on air or create believable sound effects for a convincing drama.

Meidas is doing something unusual. To ensure all have access to news, they've taken down their pay wall until election. Quite impressive, putting voters before profits.

Very very sad news. We have lost Tony De Meur - aka Ronnie Golden, he of The Fabulous Poodles, all round lovely human - and the world is a sadder place. Surely right now he is in a celestial bar swapping parrot jokes with Baz Cryer over a double.

Your point about the band is vital. I spent my Light Ent career fighting to book or keep live bands in the studio. They added energy, warmth and cohesion to the night, let alone the show. The only time I came near to falling out with Roy Hudd was about not losing the Huddlines band horn section.

Dave Gibbons making this point about Lichtenstein made me very happy.
A copy of Roy Lichtenstein’s “pop art” comic book panel painting where the text and sound effects make it clear that the work was not original nor created by Lichtenstein.

One of the things I know about writing is this: spend it all, shoot it, play it, lose it, all, right away, every time. Do not hoard what seems good for a later place in the book or for another book; give it, give it all, give it now. The impulse to save something good for a better place later is the signal to spend it now. Something more will arise for later, something better. These things fill from behind, from beneath, like well water. Similarly, the impulse to keep to yourself what you have learned is not only shameful, it is destructive. Anything you do not give freely and abundantly becomes lost to you. You open your safe and find ashes.
