Headlines like this infuriate me because they give free publicity to monstruos billionaires greenwashing their dirty money and also relying on the facts people generally are bad at comprehending the difference between a billion and a million.
Headline congratulating bezos for using 25 million of his 10 billion he pledged for conservation

It’s very simple and it’s been said over and over but I guess it needs saying continuously: if you deem one group too small to have equal rights you are enabling fascism, not fighting it. The people saying Dems are GREAT on trans rights are not paying attention and/or saying stuff like this.
Nichole Hiltz
The Democrats defend the Kennedy Center but not trans people.
A building.

@treewarrior.bsky....
maybe because defending everything about a super small minority of the population is not worth losing to fascists

This is going around as essential reading and for very good reason. Honestly the most incisive and full summary of the longtermism/x-risk pathology I have seen. Every stanza is a gem, and the closing is genius, but my personal favorite, because I have had this exact conversation almost verbatim:
[nitter.app post excerpt from banteg]

>someone asks where the one-in-a-million number came from
> expert judgement
>which expert
>us
>how calibrated
> extremely thoughtfully

›reduce estimate to one in ten million to be conservative
›still beats curing cancer by 38 orders of magnitude
›epistemic robustness achieved

You can’t have it both ways. You can’t be “It’s simple math, vote blue no matter who, grow up” and ALSO believe you are fighting fascism by making calculations as to who’s expendable. The world we’re in now demands more from us. More from everyone.

Things like this are one of the (zillions of) things that point out how important open science tools are for science. Tech can make so processing so much quicker, but if we don't know about all the little assumptions going on in black-boxed tools, our science can get steered HORRIBLY WRONG!

Sheer volume of detections in a single image: Something I just learned, lots of common CV models (like YOLO) have built-in limits (like 300 detections max) that'll quietly fail + leave you guessing as to why there are only exactly 300 bugs detected when @wellreadpanda.bsky.social labeled 1789 bugs.
so many labeled bugs
