🪲🪰 Our preprint is out! This was a team effort with @wolframponisch.bsky.social, @matthewabenton.bsky.social and Ewa Paluch. We asked whether Drosophila and Tribolium use the same cell behaviours to fold their embryos during gastrulation. 🧵👇 www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

Morphospace analysis reveals divergent cellular behaviours driving tissue internalisation during insect gastrulation
During gastrulation, embryonic epithelia undergo large-scale remodelling to internalise the mesoderm. Whether the cellular mechanisms underlying these tissue deformations are conserved across species ...

Happy to see Carlos Camacho-Macorra’s paper now out in Development! It was a fun collaboration with @osvaldo-chara.bsky.social and Alberto Ceccarelli, to determine how the notochord balances its elongation at both ends. eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com?url=https%3A...

Coupling Vgll4b/Yap regulated posterior cell addition with anterior vacuolation enables robust notochord elongation
Robust tissue growth control requires long-range communication between the rate of progenitor addition and tissue expansion. However, the regulatory mechanisms that couple these processes are unknown....

Whole body elongation drives coordinated vertebral shape evolution in Lake Malawi cichlid fishes
Understanding how anatomical structures evolve requires disentangling the roles of integration and modularity in shaping morphological variation. The vertebral column, a serially repeated and regional...

African Cichlid Lake Radiations Recapitulate Riverine Axial Morphologies Through Repeated Exploration of Morphospace
African cichlids comprise more than 1800 species of freshwater fishes, with remarkable adaptive radiations in Lakes Tanganyika, Malawi, and Victoria that have given rise to extraordinary morphological...

This month we welcomed Year 12 students who learnt how to “window” chicken eggs to observe live embryos—spotting eyes, brain, heart, and even twins in one rare case! 🐣 They also viewed development stages of zebrafish embryos, spotted fluorescent markers, and compared wildtype vs mutant embryos 🐟
