We are deeply saddened by the death of Dame Esther Rantzen. A true force of nature, Dame Esther fought throughout her life for people’s rights, and latterly for dying people who needed more choice and compassion. Our heartfelt condolences are with her family and loved ones.

Photo of campaigner for assisted dying looking at the camera, holding a placard saying 'Let us choose - legalise assisted dying'.

Text below states that important social change, such as equal marriage, reproductive choice and the abolition of slavery, is always hard won - and yet we look back now and cannot imagine a world without these reforms. It continues to state that we will regard assisted dying in the same way, in the future.

Another image of demonstrators, holding a placard with Dignity in Dying's logo on it.

Text underneath reads that this campaign has brought us to the brink of law change, and that we will continue until we change the law. It also says that law change is already coming across the UK due to the Isle of Man and Jersey voting to legalise choice.

Close up of two campaigners at a demonstration for assisted dying.

The text beneath states that the bill was reintroduced and provided a chance to continue the democratic process - but MPs voted against it, with unavoidable issues affecting attendance for many. It goes on that this is deeply disappointing - especially for dying people.

The text below says that MPs voted against the assisted dying bill despite public support and growing momentum mentioned in the previous slide. It states the vote should have never been needed - MPs approved it last year before a handful of unelected Lords blocked it.

The text below the image states that the case for law change on assisted dying remains unshakeable, and that momentum for change continues to grow - it is a matter of when, not if, we achieve law change. Photo 2 of 6.

My statement following the defeat of the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill in the House of Commons. This is hugely disappointing for thousands of terminally ill people and their loved ones. The law as it stands is simply too cruel and unjust.

We also want to thank Lauren Edwards and every MP who stood with dying people today, as well as Kim Leadbeater MP and Lord Falconer for their years of tireless work on this issue. Today's result only strengthens our resolve to keep fighting for a safer, more compassionate law.

Today’s vote should have never been needed. MPs passed the bill last year by a clear majority, before a handful of unelected Peers stalled it to a halt in the House of Lords - not through honest debate but through procedural game-playing. The public deserves better.

Dignity in Dying @dignityindying.org.uk · 11/09/2026
This debate is not hypothetical - assisted dying has been legalised in Jersey and the Isle of Man, where some terminally ill Britons will be able to access assisted dying as soon as next year, while those in England and Wales will be denied the same choice.

Dignity in Dying @dignityindying.org.uk · 11/09/2026
This is a devastating setback for dying people - but make no mistake, this issue is not going away. Law change on assisted dying remains a matter of when - not if. The British public demands that Parliament listen, and terminally ill people and families will not rest until they do.

Today is deja vu. The elected House of Commons has passed this bill already. A small number of unelected peers have no right to block legislation which commands support of the Commons. For many, no amount of safeguards will be enough. @dignityindying.org.uk

My mum wanted the details of her death heard. She strongly believed in the right to die & had a living will. We need to be honest about what death often looks like & that there is often *no* palliative care that can make someone like my mum's death any easier. TW: This thread is a difficult read.

MPs supported Assisted Dying (Leadbeater Bill) only to have Peers wreck the Bill by tabling vexatious amendments. Most people in the country, including disabled people, support it. About time it passed, not least for the sake of democracy.

Moreover, only around 1 in 6 recorded cases of assisted suicide ever reach the DPP's desk - with most cases dropped by police due to a lack of evidence, rather than compassionate discretion.  This is what is happening - and will continue to happen - in the absence of an assisted dying law.

In the absence of an assisted dying law, the report finds that terminally ill people are taking their own lives while receiving specialist palliative care, and doctors are already operating in a legal grey area to support patients seeking an assisted death abroad - with no guidance or protection.

It comes to a clear conclusion: the choice MPs and Peers are facing is between the status quo, with no oversight at all, and a tried and tested assisted dying law, with oversight and regulation at its heart.
