The level of incompetence on display is astounding. I mean, anyone with a sign for one of these two nincompoops has to be thinking of sneaking outside, taking it down, and quietly putting it in the garage. And I'm not saying this as a Gillingham supporter.

I don’t agree. The saying in my youth was if you saw one Nazi at a punk rock show, you were at a Nazi punk show. The maximum acceptable number of Nazis is zero - at a club, a convoy protest or a social media site. I left X when Musk stopped banning hate accounts. I had 40K+ followers.

From the initial stuff I've read, it sounds like the "agreement" likely won't be much different than what the two countries have had since 1951. Similar to when the orange idiot decided that NAFTA had to be renegotiated.

It doesn't really bug me with the Bombers, as I'm already purchasing Dazn for NFL games. With the Jets, I just buy TSN and don't bother watching non-TSN games. I agree that it dampens a person's enthusiasm for a team. I've come to think of this as a good thing, weirdly.

In a surprising reversal, Trump’s tariffs forced this U.S. company’s move to Canada. And it’s not the only one
Faced with Trump tariffs, some U.S. manufacturers are moving production to Ontario and Quebec to cut costs by almost 30 per cent.

A good piece explaining why Canada didn't go on the offence with export tariffs on energy. And instead tried to defend, with import tariffs on US products that Canada can make itself, thus increasing domestic demand for domestic products economicsecurity101.substack.com/p/canadas-co...

Canada’s counter-tariffs are more defence than offence — and that matters
Key objectives are import substitution and trade diversification, not changing trade policy in Washington

Hey Canadians — honey farmers are really getting hit hard by the tariff news. The US is the market for 60% of Canada’s honey. Honey doesn’t expire. They literally ate 3,000-year-old Egyptian honey & it was fine. Stock up on honey. Give it as gifts! Someone got 50 jars as wedding guest gifts.

Hard to imagine a more perfect recipe for boosting Canadian nationalism than a trade war with the Americans escalating on the same weekend everyone is reminiscing about the Tragically Hip's last show. If TSN re-aired Game 8 of the '72 Summit Series, we'd probably fall into a patriotic sugar coma.

If the ultimate deal isn't better than what I've seen so far, we SHOULD walk away. Carney should make the case that we all need to pitch in to help out those that are affected by the American war against the Canadian economy. If we need to raise taxes to do this, I am FULLY willing to do my part.

At some point, Americans are going to realize that THEY are paying these idiotic tariffs and we are all better off working together to improve our economies.

If walking away means big problems for the affected industries, let's figure out how to protect our fellow Canadians until we have someone rational to deal with. A deal with the Orange Idiot isn't worth the paper it's printed on anyway.

I'm a layman - but if you had more solar/wind power generation along with the ability to store the power, wouldn't that reduce the need for baseline hydro and enable you to use a higher proportion of the hydro for (say) cold winter nights? I'm not opposed to gas turbines in a pinch, BTW...

This letter to the editor this morning does a better job of articulating my thoughts on the op ed:
Letter to Editor in Aug 12, 2026 Winnipeg Free Press

Re: The right plan for Manitoba Hydro (Think Tank, Aug. 11) I am an interested but completely amateur observer of the discussion going on over Manitoba Hydro’s long-term energy plan. I found Hal Turner’s argument disingenuous. He blatantly implies that critics are suggesting wind and solar generation and battery storage (and eventually geothermal) as on-demand sources during peak demand times.

I think that he actually understands that this is not the case. In my understanding, those critics are proposing wind, solar and battery as alternatives for base power generation with the partially displaced hydro power being the source for meeting peak demand.

Lake Winnipeg and our northern dams, as the primary source of our province’s hydro power, are, in fact, a huge storage system that has been used effectively for decades to increase power generation during peak times. Mr. Turner knows that this could continue as a supplement to increased wind, solar and battery sources for base power. For him to ignore that perspective amounts to him being the one who is ignoring the facts.

My layperson take on Manitoba Hydro is that they often seemed trapped in the past, unwilling to move into this century. The whole world is moving rapidly to solar and wind, and we seem to be doing everything we can to NOT seriously investigate battery tech, smart grids, etc.
