I partially understand MMT arguments but can't get my head round the bond markets, cost of borrowing and how this constrains spending.

Neoliberals want to cut social security, silent on subsidies to banks. Since 2006, Bank of England has paid interest on central bank reserve deposits to commercial banks. The EU & the Swiss stopped similar practice in 2023. UK still paying, £100bn in last 3 yrs. There are better uses of £100bn.

An evergreen PG Wodehouse quote (Spode was based on the execrable Oswald Mosley). Wodehouse saw fascists as ludicrous buffoons. Understandably, perhaps, he underestimated their capacity to commit mass murder.

China tax crackdown forces wealthy investors to assess their offshore trusts. $1.2 trillion wealth held in tax havens. When will UK act? HMRC failed to collect £500bn since 2010. No report on losses from profit shifting, offshore excursions. Capital gains, dividends taxed at lower rates than wages.

This one is important because MMT is. I used AI, among other tools, when creating this post. I also used a word processor and about 50 years of experience writing about these issues. Drawing the infographic was the smallest part, and I had no budget to do it any other way.

Starmer’s goodbye gift to UK: a £44.7bn US pharma deal that could be more lethal than Covid. Pushes up the cost of NHS drugs, boosts US corporate profits. Secret contract, no debate in parliament. The next PM must renegotiate, produce drugs at home wherever possible.

Serving as an MP is a privilege and should be viewed as such by those who do the job – not as a part-time role or a get-rich-quick scheme. We need a ban on second jobs for MPs now.

Habermas commented that democratic discourse within the public sphere has been irreversibly changed by social media; many others have commented similarly. If good friends retweet "Starmer is [....]" this is more persuasive than a Daily Mail headline.

The Mail, Sketch and Telegraph ran vicious propaganda campaigns against the Labour Government 1945 to 51. It didn't stop the implementation of socialist policies, comparisons with Nazi Germany or USSR didn't work with the public who welcomed the welfare state and NHS.

10 years on from #Brexit referendum, what can we learn? That top down, technocratic arguments didn’t work then & won’t work in any campaign to rejoin. It’s about picking a side - in an increasingly insecure world, with US ever more insular & unreliable, it’s clear our future lies with EU neighbours

We desperately need PR which would utterly change the face of UK politics and would prevent Reform from forming a government on less than a third of the vote. However Blair promised PR in 97 and failed to implement. If Burnham can be totally pinned down on an agreement then OK but...
