Fun old signs time.

It should actually be illegal to film irritating pieces to camera inside a fucking museum. Death to influencers.

I tried to watch it on TV and just gave up so I guess my decision of a decade ago is vindicated.

After a day of Anglicanism yesterday today we went to the railway museum.

If she's in the lesbian bar she's meant to be in the lesbian bar is a *great* policy, it's just a shame they didn't believe in fire safety! The Simpsons misdirection bits are always so good. (And everyone smoking is so weird to me even for a cartoon.)

For any confused Americans, dogging is a traditional British term for walking the dog, if you're ever over here and see someone with their pet make sure to tell them how much you love dogging. That nothing makes you happier than seeing that wagging tail and panting mouth out on the heath.

Caught up on the "lesbian bar" discourse and I refuse to believe any of that happened.

London friends: @diffractiongrating.bsky.social and I are in London this week - currently planning drinks near Kings Cross on Thursday from 6pm - DM me for venue details - also free at various points on Saturday afternoon and Sunday lunchtime but no firm plans yet

Being on holiday is so good I am enjoying not being at work so much. I have a slight cold but my other minor health problems are basically just gone.

What's going on with this guy?
A grotesque of a demon with a frog crawling out of its mouth and a fish in its hand and a man's face in its crotch. How grotesque!

The coffee is enormous and the entire menu is music jokes. I eagerly await my lunch of a Sauerkraut Rock and a Death Cab for Charcuterie.

I thought the Harry Potter stuff in Edinburgh was pathetic and everyone needs to grow up and move on but at least she did write it in Edinburgh what the fuck is the Harry Potter theme in York for??

Thought I would probably have dinner in the pub in York but instead we went to a Spanish restaurant (La Familia y Amigos) and it was lovely.

John thought we should just ban tour buses altogether which has its appeals but if you tried to have those people get the train I can't imagine it would be good for the train.

Valéry Giscard d'Estaing @diffractiongrating.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
Further suggestion to make labyrinthine old towns better: ban tour buses and make them stay in the suburbs/newer town where they won't completely block all the roads.

Valéry Giscard d'Estaing @diffractiongrating.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
Suggestion on how to make popular cities better: stop group walking tours and just have people to walk around themselves looking at the plaques on buildings/maps/Wikipedia. I have nothing against sightseeing but the groups get in the way of everyone and make people resent all visitors.

A lot of things about NSW country trains aren't especially good but they do ensure the seats are all facing forwards and I appreciate that.

I assume it was part charity and part not wanting to have me throw up on our shared table as I assume I looked like I would. I was sufficiently in a fugue state John had to point out he had even made the offer because I just didn't actually notice anyone talking, let alone that it was to me.

Thank you to the nice man who noticed I looked like I was going to die sitting backwards on the train (which is itself backwards!! My seat should have been forwards based on the map!! Rude!!) and swapped seats.

Central heating in northern Europe update: it is the temperature of a conservatory inside and I had to turn off the radiator in the bedroom and open the window so I could breathe.

For related reasons I also do not like constant sales. Price the items at the price you want to receive for them, not higher and then you frequently discount them to lower so they average out to the correct price across all customers' purchases.

All love and respect to the middle aged couple who just ordered a second dozen oysters at 5:26 when the £2 oyster happy hour ended at 5:30. Especially for inspiring us to also order more oysters before 5:30.

The other thing is everyone always complains that putting a duvet in its cover is difficult and annoying and like... You could just not? If they're annoying why not use the very simple alternative available which does not have this problem!
101
Valéry Giscard d'Estaing @diffractiongrating.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
Anyway I slept badly and I'm annoyed and I will not (cannot) rest until I see duvets stricken from this earth and replaced with the sensible and normal option of a sheet and multiple blankets so you can modulate the temperature.
100
Valéry Giscard d'Estaing @diffractiongrating.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
Is everyone on team duvet actually a lizard or something? I always thought I was somewhat reptilian in how easily I get cold but these things just massively overheat me because I do actually produce my own body heat and then they very effectively trap it.
100
Valéry Giscard d'Estaing @diffractiongrating.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
I hate duvets so much they are horrible. Yes I would like to be either drenched in sweat because I am under insulation of multiple geese despite not being outside like a goose or else have no bedding obviously these are the only two options that there are.
110
Valéry Giscard d'Estaing @diffractiongrating.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
I think I turned the radiator off (it was the middle of the night and I see these things like once per year) and now the room is sufficiently cold my hands are freezing outside the duvet, which is the only fucking temperature it is possible to use a duvet at.
100
Valéry Giscard d'Estaing @diffractiongrating.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
I have been too hot (trying to sleep with stupid duvet) or else too cold (sleeping with only duvet cover and then nothing else because there is nothing else) every fucking night and I have no idea how you people live.
100
Valéry Giscard d'Estaing @diffractiongrating.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
Increasingly convinced that Australians having horrible cold houses with no heating is actually good and fine because at least you don't wake up far too hot and have to figure out how some fucking radiator works because the only bedding is a huge duvet.
