My preprint on theory of mind in large language models is up! I argue that we cannot simply transfer a psychological measure designed to test for ToM in biological organisms to a complex artificial system and assume it measures the same thing. Comments welcome. philpapers.org/rec/VANDGH-2

Pleased to announce this is now forthcoming in Philosophical Studies. I first presented it in 2024, and thanks to many conversations I'm happy with how it turned out. Grateful to the guest editors and reviewers for their input too! philpapers.org/rec/OPEGRL

We’ve got an exciting new thing to share! We have causal evidence (using TMR) that memory reactivation during sleep promotes abstract understanding of underlying structure, allowing transfer learning in a new domain with zero superficial feature overlap with the learned one.

Super excited to share this one!! Meta-learning sparsity and learning rate gives rise to brain-like gradients of complementary learning systems. So complementary learning systems emerge organically through behavior optimization, and it's not just two of them!!

I think it is actually quite a striking feature of contemporary analytic philosophy that a non-trivial amount of time is spent arguing about the appropriate immediate emotional reaction to micro-fictions.
