Grateful to share this piece I co-authored with Sue O’Neill. We reflect on the labels used for #GenderBasedViolence #GBV such as victim, survivor, and person with lived experience, and why #LanguageMatters. Context, power, and impact count!

[PLEASE SHARE] How do queer* people experience online harm in Canada? McMaster researchers are seeking queer adults in Canada for an anonymous survey about harm on digital platforms. Take the survey here: surveys.mcmaster.ca/limesurvey/i... Full information in second photo (with alt-text).
How do queer* people experience online harm in Canada? [Please share!]

McMaster researchers are looking for queer individuals, aged 18 or older and residing in Canada, to take part in an anonymous survey. The survey asks about queer people’s experiences of harm on digital platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Twitter (X), Facebook, YouTube, and Twitch.

The survey is administered online in English and takes approximately 20 minutes to complete. Before beginning, you will be presented with a Letter of Information and asked to indicate your consent by selecting a consent button. Participation in this study is entirely voluntary, and you may choose not to participate or withdraw at any time after providing consent without any consequences.

You can access the survey by clicking the link in the post.

For questions about this study, please contact: cochra1@mcmaster.ca

* For the purpose of this study, we use queer as an umbrella term to refer to those whose gender identity or sexual orientation fall outside of heterosexual or cisgender. Examples include asexual, bisexual, gay, lesbian, pansexual, non-binary, genderqueer, genderfluid, Two-Spirit, and trans people.

This study has been reviewed by and received ethics clearance from the McMaster Research Ethics Board (#7697).

Meta’s PR spin is deeply disingenuous. AI glasses make it even easier to create and share non-consensual intimate images, accelerating an already fast-growing form of gender-based violence.

[1/2] The upcoming 2025 Canadian federal election is a critical moment for the #HSS in Canada. With their role in society and policymaking increasingly under question in Canadian politics, it is vital to reaffirm their value in shaping evidence-informed policies.

It was such an honor to do an interview with @kylietcheung.bsky.social about On the Wrong Side—especially since I loved Survivor Injustice so much. Our conversation got to the core issue in sexual violence: perpetrators are protected and survivors are punished for seeking help and safety.

I see a lot of people talk about the environmental costs of AI. I don't see as much about the human exploitation behind it.

A reminder for #InternationalDayOfPersonsWithDisabilities to recognize wholeness, including a person's hobbies, strengths, needs, identities, and expertise. 💫 People with disabilities often face harmful labels and reductionist understandings that result in a denial of their human rights. #IDPD
