I'm excited to announce that the PLC Organization now has a statute! And a bank account! And a @standard.site publication! All the important stuff. The PLC Org is an independent Swiss Association meant to operate the PLC directory, which collects and distributes signed updates to atproto accounts.

Hello World from the PLC organization (plcred.org)! The org was soft-announced back in March at AtmosphereConf. We've been working through logistics step by step and now have a public web presence we can point to.

0016: Use STAR files for space repo exports by dholms · Pull Request #114 · bluesky-social/proposals

maybe STAR could specify it as "bytes" and then particular use cases (like for repo data for instance) could require DRISL
130
daniel holmgren 🫠 @dholms.at · 25/09/2026
nice this looks like basically exactly what i had in mind one last question: are `val` in the data section always dag-cbor (and can therefore be decoded while deserializing the STAR)? or is it arbitrary bytes (in each case a second pass is requierd per-value)?

nice hell yea that seems to strike a good level of specific/generic. it's pretty atproto-specific, but it works for many different repo/data types. it's really just "any mapping of path -> dag-cbor with some header metadata" you could even imagine like label exports using this
140
daniel holmgren 🫠 @dholms.at · 25/09/2026
i think one of two things: - it should reference the archive type not the commit type (so "s" for space instead of "L" for LtHash) - or the 4th byte can just be eliminated and that type of switching is handled in the header cbor rather than by the serialization format
130
daniel holmgren 🫠 @dholms.at · 25/09/2026
oh i realized after reading this that my comment on magic bytes might have been unclear i like the first three magic bytes! i'm just not sure about the 4th
140
daniel holmgren 🫠 @dholms.at · 25/09/2026
but then I kinda wonder if these details shouldn't be in the serialization format at all? like what if the header just goes: magic | len | cbor and the cbor could be something like: { $type: "atproto-space-repo", rev: ..., repo: ... }
160
daniel holmgren 🫠 @dholms.at · 25/09/2026
reason being, I'm interested in a "full account export" with all space repos & public repo (for account migrations & backups) this wouldn't have a single "commit" to put in the header is the commit CID necessary? can't you just hash the commit? (similar to how STAR eliminates all the record CIDs)
171
daniel holmgren 🫠 @dholms.at · 25/09/2026
i wonder if the magic byte should describe what's in the STAR file rather than the type of commitment. so instead of "L" for LtHash, it could be "s" for "space repo" also maybe not containing the commitment in the header
160
daniel holmgren 🫠 @dholms.at · 25/09/2026
nice i dig it, thanks for writing this up! I'm pretty much sold on doing something STAR-like for atproto spaces (CARs feel like a bad fit cuz space repos aren't DAGs) the one thing i'm not sure about is the extra magic byte

honestly authorization servers probably need to start flagging bare permissions like this as dangerous! like these should be in red and say "only click authorize if you know what these NSIDs mean" maybe this warning could be softened if all the resource NSIDs match the client id domain?
4371
daniel holmgren 🫠 @dholms.at · 23/09/2026
i think we need to do a permission sets push... permission sets are mainly for giving nice human-readable, user-friendly descriptions of resources! if your OAuth screen looks like this, consider publishing/using permission sets. this is scary/useless/non-sensical to users
an atproto oauth screen that has the generic "repository - public changes" and "authenticate - perform actions on your behalf" resources

on thursdays we drop the latest/greatest updates to the spec on the atproto spaces alpha host. first round of updates are now live! if you're interested in building against atproto spaces while it's in alpha, you can read more and get access here: atproto.com/blog/atproto...

The Atproto Spaces Alpha is Live
Atproto Spaces, formerly known as “the permissioned data protocol,” is a new extension to atproto that enables non-public data. The alpha is now officially open. Here’s how to develop with it and what to expect as we work towards the full release.

i mostly think the "y'all" thing is funny cause growing up (in the ozarks) my mom encouraged me not to say it along with words like "ain't" because it sounded hick & people would look down on it & now the same social contexts that she worried about adopted it as the *more* socially-acceptable term
