Well look at that, Trump got exactly what he wanted out of the exchange with Mamdani, and Mamdani successfully bypassed a media boycott.

New: Trump called crypto "thin air." Last year, he reported $1.4 billion in income from it. Buyers of his crypto? They're an estimated $4.7 billion underwater. I made an 8-bit game out of it— 📈 Play as Trump: you cannot lose money. 📉 Play as an investor: you cannot win.

Rabbi Alan Lew - This is Real and You Are Completely Unprepared. Heavy Days of Awe reading. Like much of the best Judaica, there's nary an answer, just more probing questions. And we wonder why Jews are associated with high anxiety...
Passage from Rabbi Alan Lew's book, This is Real and You Are Completey Unprepared, reading: "And here is the bad news I have come to deliver. This is a true story, and it is not about me or my mother or a man desperate to blow the shofar. It is about you. It is really happening, and it is happening to you, and you are seriously unprepared.

"And is it real whether you believe in God or not. Perhaps God made it real and perhaps God did not. Perhaps God created this pageant of judgment and choice, of transformation, of life and of death. Perhaps God created the Book of Life and the Book of Death, Teshuvah and the blowing of the shofar. Or perhaps these are all just inventions of human culture. It makes no difference. It is equally real in any case."

the incredible ass-showing from the "rEAd HiS LeTTEr" idiots is that they truly prefer to judge people on words over actions. By that logic I could see an attempt to rehab Jim Jones' image next; after all he was a civil rights activist before the abuse and mass murder of mainly Black people.

Individually these things all seem petty, but put it together and you understand why it's going to likely take some new constitutional amendments before other countries ever trust the US again.

What's happening is very simple. Tucker is a Nazi, and he's anti-Israel for Nazi reasons as opposed to anti-Israel for anti-genocide reasons. Consequently, he's going to side with the more anti-Israel candidate because that's his defining animus. You don't have to respect it or praise it.

I don't know a single person who can stand by 100% of what they've said they liked in the past, whether it's politicians or art or media outlets, etc. This is also something that most functioning humans learn by their early teens ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

what I don't get is that it's not like saying "he's different now than when I supported him" is some horrible thing to do - people change and not always for the better! Unless, of course, you feel the need to dictate reality so that you've always been right about everything.

What really kills me about the last decade or so of populism is that it's very social media-poisoned - prioritizing the magnitude of promises vs actual follow-through, then telling anyone who wants actual plans that they just don't *believe* hard enough. Sick of it!

Just sick of populists excusing fascist supporters like they know not what they do - why do nearly 50% of voters here have no agency? Yes it sucks to acknowledge that racism and xenophobia are that popular, but shouting “lalala economic anxiety” won’t change that.
000
david @dhla.me · 08/09/2026
Hilarious/frustrating watching American populists try to blame SPD for AfD’s victory with the same “economic anxiety” BS suggesting the fascist base are leftists in waiting. It’s a parliamentary system and Die Linke, Greens, and hell BSW were on the ballot. Why didn’t they smoke AfD then?
100
david @dhla.me · 08/09/2026
These arguments that the AfD base are just leftists in waiting also ignore that there are multiple leftist parties they could have supported but didn’t. Because then you’d have to acknowledge that given Die Linke and AfD, the latter way outdid the former and it wasn’t because of “economic anxiety”

I love documentaries, and easily my least-favorite genre of them is the wild setup - usually involving some villain - presents as "okay I know how this sounds but *when you see it it's just another level*" Yes, thank you Garden State, I'm sure this time The Shins will change my life.

The most obnoxious thing about Elizabeth Holmes is that we keep getting sold this idea that there's some incredible story there. She tried to inhabit the right stereotypes to be a "young genius", she lied about important things, and she got caught.

I'd ask how you could become like that, but I think growing up with zero consequences is the answer. When you've never actually faced a consequence that you had to work your way out of, you might assume you're just better than everyone else, and that safeguards for the little people don't matter.
