"Does the UK want to reopen the bitter Brexit debate?" asks Vicki Young. There is a way of reviewing our relationship with Europe that does not reopen "the bitter Brexit debate", which I think is underpriced. We could all be honest and agree that Brexit was a shit idea.

I think there’s a misunderstanding of the term “EU Accession negotiations”. Negotiation, in this sense, is primarily over how and by when an applicant will implement or align with each area of EU law (Acquis Communautaire), and then whether they‘ve done that. It’s not over *whether* they will.

"Spending more on defence" is such a stupid framing. What we need (if that) is more personnel, materiel, organization etc. "More spending" confuses inputs with outputs, & could be merely corporate welfare for military contractors.

The OBR needs to give us more clarity on migration

#Denmark built so much wind that some blustery hours the turbines out-produce what the whole country is using. When that happens, the extra power doesn’t sit idle. It moves through Denmark’s links into the wider European network and heads to neighbors like Germany, Norway, Sweden. #ActOnClimate

It is the struggle against the far-right and for democracy and solidarity which requires leadership in both the EU, its member states and the UK.

This is something that also needs to be done in the EU and its member states. The EPP & the Commission led by UvdL, are seeking to rebuild an EP majority working with the right; this will fail to help the EU grow and consolidate. As shown yesterday, it may also fail for them electorally.

A problem with chats and micro-blogs; one often shortens the post and misses things. On Brexit and EU/UK relations, it’s for the UK to lead, and for Britain’s politicians to find some courage and confront the Brexiteers, rather than as in the case of Labour, triangulating with the hard-right.

The EU will survive without the UK and it is changing up, most significantly for the UK via its Industrial Accelerator Act (IAA). The IAA is likely to increase the UK’s barriers to entry EU markets, harm the UK economy, and thus the living standards of the UK people.

It’s like a game of snakes and ladders, and Labour has just slid down a snake. I doubt that Starmer and NST would have moved far enough but as you say, the Burnham position is not better, nor more likely to succeed. Let’s hope it doesn’t take them two years to learn this.

I meant to comment on your thread last week, but needed a keyboard. It is disappointing for British Rejoiners that Burnham’s team unlike some of the PLP, including possibly Starmer, feel the Reset has been a success. Nothing agreed as agenda items at the May 25 EU-UK summit has been closed.
