We'll set aside the bigger question of whether these are raw averages or weighted averages.

Random data best-practices question: when trying to visually show differences between A and the average of B/C/D... should you include A in the averaged group?? I feel like it only dilutes your argument. Inspired by this Bloomberg visualization:

Had a chance to finally sit down and distill some of things I learned at my last job as a firmographer. Don't know what a firmographer is? Well, neither did I when I started - read on and see!

Author's Note: Timeliness is rarely the forte of this blog. This post, begun in late 2025, is about work I conducted at my previous employer, Markaaz. Although I have since left Markaaz, I still wanted to share about a few of the interesting projects I worked on during my time there. Stay tuned for future posts related to my current professional work.

Before sports betting was legalized everywhere, I was neutral about it, thinking that it was a personal choice. Now that it exists everywhere I have been radicalized against it like a 19th century suffragette

Is there a place/way where this video can be downloaded? Would love to use it in an upcoming class, but worried about the ephemeralness of social media links.

Out on a run and came across a couple having a break up. The woman yelled that the guy cared more about “his YouTube videos” than her. Fully expected it to be some Andrew Tate shit until he sheepishly said “trains mean so much to me but you’ve never understood that”

Enjoyed the big picture but up-to-date take you wrote here. Reading it, I kept thinking about Timothy Mitchell's argument about how the difference in the degree of centralization needed to extract energy from coal vs. oil led to very different political systems in the 19th vs. 20th centuries.

Genre glitching: a new sign of AI-assisted writing? Thanks to @doremus-schafer.bsky.social and @srettberg.bsky.social who shared the two examples of this that I discuss in today's blog post. Please please please send me any other examples you see of this! jilltxt.net/genre-glitch...

Genre glitches and unexpected promotional phrases as a sign of AI writing
A genre glitch is a characteristic of LLM-assisted writing where the text suddenly switches genre, typically inserting a short promotional phrase full of sensory details into an informational text.…

HITL Is Not a Panacea for AI Decision-Making
Over the last few weeks, I’ve listened to several conference panels where experts discussed how the advent of artificial intelligence (AI) would impact, inter alia, banking, national defense, and intelligence gathering. And there’s been a consistent theme across every one of these panels: someone from the audience will ask a question about how the potential downsides of AI adoption can be mitigated, and one of the experts will reply, “Well, obviously we have to ensure that any AI decision-making keeps humans in the loop” (HITL), while the other experts solemnly nod along in agreement.

At the end, I consider 4 plausible specific scenarios that could happen over the next 18 months. 1) A Boycott of a Major Video Game for Geopolitical Reasons 2) A Ban on a Foreign Mobile Game by the US Gov't 3) Increased Regulatory Pressure on Valve's Steam 4) Tencent Having to Divest Its US Holdings

Just published a piece on how the video game industry is weathering the Great Decoupling between the US and China. Regulators in both China and the US are taking a heightened interest in this lucrative, highly globalized, and increasingly politicized industry. wp.me/p7BZNR-12d

ILL/ILB library staff are the real heroes of basically all research, especially humanities research. Just insane to watch us, as a society, actively opting to let decades of knowledge and progress rot, not out of poverty, but out of a mix of apathy and malice.

This is a funny reminder that at the start of the year I was very worried that we were not going to renew the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA, our unilateral trade deal with many African countries), and how quaint that worry looks versus the current 10% tariffs on all African countries

I’m losing my mind here. USTR made a list of “Unfair trade practices” they’re retaliating against, complaint number 5 is that the EU cares too much about stopping illegal deforestation, complaint number 7 is that the South Americans are doing too much illegal deforestation
“5/10: The EU's Deforestation-free Supply Chain Regulation (EUDR) aims to prohibit imports of seven products—including cattle, cocoa, rubber, and wood—unless exporters meet various burdensome compliance requirements, including due diligence and geolocation data.

It is estimated the EUDR will potentially impact $8.6 billion worth of annual U.S. agricultural and industrial exports.”

7/10: Illegal logging and illegal mining in South America, particularly in Brazil, Peru, Colombia, and Ecuador, fuel environmental degradation and create unfair competition that harms U.S. businesses committed to responsible sourcing and compliance with environmental laws.

These illicit activities, which usually involve transnational criminal organizations, distort global commodity markets by driving down prices and allowing bad actors to undercut legitimate American exporters.

Again, nobody is forcing them to put tariffs on bananas, coffee, avocados, or any of the hundreds food/minerals/materials that literally can't be obtained in the US. They could write exemptions for any or all of them. Instead they press the "make groceries more expensive" button.

The US doesn't need Greenland, it's already got Alaska.

America Already Has a Greenland. It’s Called Alaska.
There is a well-established pattern from the first Trump presidency that the world temporarily forgot during the Biden years and is now rediscovering. Trump will pick up provocative ideas from people in his orbit, will repeat them out loud, people will freak out, causing Trump to double down, and then the commenting classes will write articles saying, "Well, you know, actually the idea isn't that dumb." But the idea does indeed remain fundamentally unsound.
