iiinova — where your digital self keeps evolving

Oh my god, that’s great. That little synth bass growl that just gets snuck in for a couple beats here and there, the slightly-too-close-for-comfort strings, it’s magic. I don’t know whether to go straight home and buy this game, rewatch Twin Peaks, or read Appalachian folk horror.

Cool, I hope these can guide your exploration a little (even on what to avoid!) Kae’s whole discography is good - Everybody Down, his first record, is a whole narrative cycle in verse - but the production on this newest album just soars. It was hard to pick which track would fit you best!

And for an off-field pick, try Hyro the Hero’s cover of Woo Hah!! Got You All in Check. Metal/rap hybrid but leading from the rap side.

Dr. Octagon (Kool Keith alter ego), Halfsharkalligatorhalfman. Gritty, sci-fi production, insistent bass, angular flow. (Most of Keith’s discography gets a CW for..well, everything.) Kae Tempest, Statue in the Square. Dense, verse is a little light on the low end but wait for the chorus.

Couple additional things I’m hearing in those tracks are some tension and angularity in the flow, and production that’s referencing old school without being old school, so with that in mind: Blackalicious, Paragraph President. Solid low end, pressure in the flow, verbal acrobatics.

I’m seeing a lot of posts about talking to your sons in light of the Cornell article. And yes. Talk to your sons. Here are some things you should say, based on anti-violence research about what they need to hear:

That’s heavy for sure, my friend. And (as I’m certain you well know) unique, complex history means that your treatment’s also likely to be unique and complex, which usually means either heavily manualized or “where we’re going we don’t need roads”. I hope you find/create the right fit. ❤️

I’m a nerd so my strongest memory is “this is a masterclass on breath support”. 😃 They were <almost> too potent for the room but the good kind of overwhelming, if that makes sense?

Ooooh! For sure: Failure - “Stuck on You” Counting Crows - “A Long December” Asterisks: “Why We Tell the Story” from Once on This Island, but none of the albums hit like it does live. (Original Broadway is closest.) Public Enemy - “Fight the Power”, but the first 15sec are a non-music sample.

Discovered that this app is what’s destroying my phone battery, so until I find a solution I’ll be significantly less present on here. Apologies for any delayed responses.

Ok, I definitely need to re-read with this in mind. Had the great good fortune to hear them in a little ~100 cap room last year and it was magical (or maybe science-fictional?)

I tend to view Self as a communication system, and kind of as a goal/intention/thingy? (Disclosure: I do not specialize in DID and my conceptual model in that space is pretty theoretical.)

That’s an interesting model; I’m also an IFS person at core, but I’ve never imagined Self as untouched by trauma (because how could it be, even though the parts are there to tank the trauma for it Self still is there in those moments?)

This comic caused me to make an exceedingly undignified noise on a crowded Amtrak train.

NGL, as a provider I fuckin’ love that moment. “Alright, let’s toss the book and find a new route. Let’s do science together.”

I fear Baroness may have ruined me for metal that isn’t played on single coils and small clean amps. It’s still big and heavy, but there’s <space> in the sound. I can unstitch it into separate voices. I can find the human in the sound.

Regular reminder that I make $100-200 in sales in a good month, and if I can't get a work exemption for Medicaid, my only option to keep my lifesaving medication is to magically quintuple-to-sextuple that number.
