Gonna write a bit more. There were a good few here that were a real challenge. A lot of retro controllers used the NES layout, but overcomplicated the actual design. Seriously, check out the SuperGrafx controller. Let me know if I should post more, I have more. Trust me. (ALT TEXT!! CHECK IT!!)

In Yoshi's Island, a cave background sparkles, but only when Yoshi moves. This is achieved in an inventive way by making many 1-pixel "pinholes" in the background through which a field of stars is visible. The parallax motion shows the stars intermittently, creating sparkles.

this may sound weird considering im making my own game. But i actually sat down, and actually played it for once. and i have to say it feels so much fun to play. It's the same nostalgic feeling i had playing cavern of dreams, or banjo kazooie, it's soooo much fun to do!
