Coming up quick on the 5th birthday I didn't think I'd have. This is the poem I wrote when I realized I had done enough work to actually want to stay alive, the one that made me realize maybe my book could be a thing because I'd actually be around to write it.

This Is Not A Tragedy

You wouldn't believe the lies the human brain can create. The mental gymnastics it masters to counter reality, to counter what's right in front of you.

I remember the conversations I had with myself. The reassurances of my own insignificance, of times ability to... soften the impact for those I left behind.

This was not a piece I envisioned writing.

This was not a chapter of my story that was meant to be written.

And yet.

Somewhere between that bathtub and here, between shattering and now, I met my own gaze in the mirror for the first time. Storm clouds and anger like lightning, grief a monsoon.

I took a breath.

How to even begin talking about the work? The ripping open old wounds to heal in the present? The reconstruction? How terrifying the pain, how horrifying to realize the more I knew myself the less I was known.

I was at rest and roaming, pacing the cage of my skin like a lion. Like a liar. Layers to sift through and enough skeletons in enough closets to make my home feel like a cemetery. My hope feel like a grave.

I kept meeting my own gaze. Kept doing the work.

You wouldn't believe the resilience the human heart has.

Colors started coming back to me. A few notes of a song. A clover. A -

This is not a tragedy, part 2:

- cup of tea. A meal with a friend. The urge to write. Somewhere along the way, the clouds parted. Bright beams of sunshine breaking through the grey.

When I look in the mirror these days, I can see the kid that ran barefoot through mint patches, kicking their scent up into the summer heat. The kid with pockets full of seashells, planting orange seeds at Promised Land.

I recall the way they saw the world, always chasing wildflowers.

This is not a tragedy.

It's a thank you letter to that little one's dirt smeared face and white knuckle grip on their bouquet. To the light they bring. The light I know was there for me to find in my own reflection the whole time.

There were storm clouds from the start. There was no me before them and there would be no me without the petrichor.

and yet...

How lovely to play in the puddles.

How lovely to watch the rain fall -- warm and gentle now, thunder a distant rumble -- into the garden that I've planted with my own two hands.

I was about 7 or 8 when I realized that getting a new pair of shoes would mean we needed to skip paying the cable bill. It taught me to hide my needs and expect nothing. The lasting damage this sort of trauma does can't be overstated.

I'm so pleased with how they came out. this project is turning into a much larger undertaking than I had expected it to be, but at least this part is done. now for all the other appliques, the cutting, layout, assembly..... phew. it's gonna be worth it but damn.
