Keith Tipton RIP. He was professor of biochemistry in TCD when I was in 1st year. His wit was sharp and often hilarious and sometimes savage.

I have battled Tobacco addiction for over 50.years. I finally got off it by vaping. The usual dose has 5 ingredients, none carcinogenic or known to be harmful and used to cost 4 euro. The Irishc**nts Government just raised to price to 11.5euro Thanks a load

I saw them live just once, complete with "go go dancers". I vaguely recall that some of them worked in the Golden Dawn just off Temple Bar, Dublin's only macrobiotic restaurant. Full marks for effort by them but I need to check out that song

Damn it all, their advantage is so huge that mildly athletic men have been switching gender in droves just to get to the Olympics. Like you DON’T, because that would be weird and much too much to do with your entire life if you weren’t actually trans. And, as the numbers prove, isn’t happening.

You really aren't going to get a better example of how the British media works than the contrasting coverage of two Irish authors this week. The brave and sensitive transphobe John Boyne vs the vile and hateful opponent of genocide Sally Rooney.

I got a flu booster today and it made me reflect on the sense of national accomplishment I felt when I drove to a public facility, waited in my car until my number was called on an app, and got my first covid jab. It's fucked the right gets to erase what a moment of technological liberation that was

📣 Palm oil is a *terrible* climate solution! I don’t repeat topics in my column, but this month I made an exception. HVO is being marketed even more aggressively as a miracle “drop in” fuel for everything from homes to buses to data centres. www.irishtimes.com/environment/...

HVO is a climate ‘quick fix’ that could be worse than fossil fuels

So I'm watching a modern London version of a Sherlock Holmes story and I see a front door with the number 221b. I Google the address of SH and I see variants of the search including "Where did the real Sherlock Holmes live"? And there I was thinking it was fiction

Unfortunately it’s clear that the Israeli people can’t topple the government or change its ways. Seems like the attorney general, the last gate keeper, will be fired soon. As long as we’re stuck with this government, the war won’t stop. Only international intervention (=the U.S) might do it.

It’s heartening to see that @deshiggins.bsky.social’s influence in the world of men’s fashion is as strong as ever.
Ad for bleeding-edge men’s fashion items. Photo: two cheerful models wearing, from top to bottom, short-sleeved white “business shirts”, $2.99; daringly wide “fashion ties”,
$3.99; “fashion shorts” (basically, suit trousers cut down to have the profile of 1980s Bundesliga shorts), $7.99; belts (“leather belts”, to be precise), $2.99; and “walk socks” (thin white socks ending just below the knee), 99 cent the pair; and dark leather shoes (not for sale).

It's very difficult to get detailed information on-line for this. I can see individual case studies but otherwise just general statements that it should return but might not. The symptoms are hard to be precise about. It's as if my taste mechanism can see the price tag on the wine bottle :-)

Des Higgins @deshiggins.bsky.social · 06/07/2025
I have had this lack of wine taste since October 2024. I can taste cheap wine but anything tannic tastes dead and very heavy. I think my sense of smell is fine. I feel like a spoiled middle class jerk complaining that I can't taste expensive wine. It used to be my weekend treat.

I went past this view hundreds of times over the past 55 years and never looked up. You can smell the malt being roasted at certain times of the day. Those big vertical white tanks are full of Guinness. This is on the western outskirts of Dublin City centre upriver along the Liffey.

When I was a student in late 1970s ireland, a friend organised an expedition to the midlands to look for these. It had not been recorded in Irl for decades. Paul Harding came over from Monks Wood to help. We found them in Thyme clumps in Tipperary...in the woodlouse Atlas as a couple of dots.
