Looks the image of Brisbane Story Bridge but this is the Jacques Cartier bridge in Montreal. The Canadian bridge dates to 1930 and John Bradfield borrowed its design for the Brisbane bridge built between 1935-40

This tunnel window at King George Sq bus station is a rare reminder of the now buried Wheat Creek which ran through what became Brisbane was an important water source for Indigenous people and Moreton Bay penal colony. It was gradually built over and forgotten
On a station platform is a circular tunnel with a brick lined entrance with glass behind it. Sadly there is no interpretative signage explaining its purpose

In the case of buses, cancelling existing contracts made in good faith so we can buy hundreds of fossil fuel emitting diesel vehicles, is terrible intervention. It will also leave taxpayers with the ongoing bill as the price of diesel continues to soar, amid fluctuating supplies. 7/n

Derek Barry @derek-barry.bsky.social · 06/09/2026
More importantly, it is untrue. If the government was genuinely tech agnostic it would not be buying any buses at all, and instead let the market itself sort out transport needs. But the government acknowledges that market failures need intervention. 6/n

Derek Barry @derek-barry.bsky.social · 06/09/2026
I read that the government is hiding behind the excuse that it is "tech agnostic". This is plain silly. Does the government plan to support a network of blacksmiths in case horseriding makes a comeback? 5/n

Derek Barry @derek-barry.bsky.social · 06/09/2026
I applaud the government's continued support for 50c local fares which is an important attitude changer towards public transport. But transport must keep with the times it serves. The solution should be to fix the infrastructure that supports electric transport, not baulk at providing it. 4/n

Derek Barry @derek-barry.bsky.social · 06/09/2026
The electric transport network is still evolving and there are still far too few charging stations. But the trend is heading only one way. Electric vehicles, in conjunction with active transport strategies are the way forward for Brisbane's roads into the middle of the 21st century. 3/n
