Hey, the plan was that we weren’t supposed to have to do anything today. And then the universe laughed, just like every time we make plans.

Both negatvely affect libraries, taxpayers, and authors. We will always buy the best sellers. But when we spend so much on a single title, we’re not buying books from mid-list authors or new debut authors. Same thing happens when per-circ costs are so high.

We are a large library system. $22,500 exceeds the entire ebook budget of some libraries.

So much of librarian ebook math is depressing. Ebook: $59.99 x 150 copies = ~$9,000 Eaudio: $89.99 x 150 copies = ~$13,500 Lending model: 24 months, then we need to re-buy Current holds: Ebook: 1,281 ~20 week wait Eaudio: 1,522 ~21 week wait This is a single title.

Not to mention: delivery drivers, janitorial staff, HR folks, finance folks, website folks, communication folks. And, of course, the staff you see answering questions, presenting programs, shelving books, checking out materials, teaching classes, visiting schools. #LibrariesWorkBecauseWeDo

There are so many people behind the scenes at your local library. The folks who select materials, who buy them, who receive the materials and make sure they have covers and barcodes, and those who make sure they’re in the computer. Maybe it’s one person. Maybe it’s 30. #LibrariesWorkBecauseWeDo

I can’t remember the last time I read a book at work. I haven’t shelved a book in at least 4 years. I make sure that our patrons have books and other resources in a huge variety of formats and that those resources are findable and accessible. #LibrariesWorkBecauseWeDo

#NationalLibraryWorkersDay I have a Master’s Degree in Library Science. Not all librarians and library workers do. On the job experience is every bit as important as a degree. In my 20+ year career in libraries, I have been shushed an order of magnitude more times than I have shushed a patron.

This is why being involved in hyper-local politics is so important. Pay attention to your school board, your library board, your town council. Fascists don’t like kids who think. They grow into hard-to-control adults.

“Today, many schools and libraries rely on books from companies like Scholastic Inc.—often filled with confusing, political, or even inappropriate messages for children.” “Inappropriate messages” like slavery is bad, trans people exist, women are autonomous beings.

ICYMI amidst all of the other dumpster fires, $14 million was stolen from libraries and funneled to Hillsdale College and PragerU to fund white supremacist revisionist history and pro-regime propaganda. Cuts to IMLS funding will impact small public libraries the hardest.

Book banning in public and school libraries is still very much happening. booksunbanned.com supports the rights of teens to read. Teens can get a digital library card that allows them access to ebooks regardless of where they live. #coreforum2025

AI is not taking people’s jobs. We could allow people to work less and pay them the same. We could free people’s time for other pursuits. But HUMANS make those decisions to lay off people because capitalism

💙📚 Takes place prior to the events in Invasive. @chuckwendig.bsky.social plays upon my fears about computers taking over the world. It is interesting to see the early seeds of Wanderers on this book (and Invasive). Lower squick, just as many nightmares. Recommend!

💙📚Did @kevinhearne.bsky.social write an entire book so he could offhandedly drop in the legend of the creation of truck nutz? Uproarious humor, redemption arcs, adventure, and love cheese. And the phenomenal narration of Luke Daniels.

💙📚 Super high squick-factor on this one, but the story was so good that I kept reading it even while plagued by a recurring case of stress hives. I really loved how Hannah’s background informed her reactions and interactions. @chuckwendig.bsky.social, I hate you for formication nightmares. 🐜

💙📚 The only thing better than a book by @kevinhearne.bsky.social is that book read by Luke Daniels. This laugh-out-loud wild ride accompanied me & my family on a recent road trip. The 14-year-old was locked in immediately locked in, but even the 19-year-old was quickly captivated.

Needed a book to read for the end of my trip, and this ebook was immediately available from my library. The first “I hate you, @chuckwendig.bsky.social” moment came in the second chapter. I think I should not have picked this one while suffering from hives.

💙📚I am not sure where this recommendation came from, but I am very glad I came across it. I like my horror with a side of humor and The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins was a fun read. The story wrapped up neatly but I’d gladly spend more time in this world.
Cover of The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins. The cover looks like a book that is burnt around the edges with a large hole ripped out of the center. Through the hole there is the silhouette of a house with a sunset (or sunrise) behind it.

💙📚The third book in the series, Children of Memory is a meditation on what makes someone a sentient being. The corvids, Gothi and Gethli, are an impeccable embodiment of the benefits of neurodiversity. Definite echoes of why my partner and I make such a good combination.
Cover of Adrian Tchaikovsky’s Children of Memory. It features a yellow-toned planet highlighted by a star flare. There is a space ship in the lower right corner.

💙📚Octopodes In Spaaaaace! The sequel to Children of Time does not disappoint. Again Tchaikovsky envelopes the reader in a completely alien way of thinking. Incredible world building. Also highly recommend this as an audiobook; I alternated listening and reading.
Cover of Children of Ruin by Adrian Tchaikovsky. Cover features a red-toned planet highlighted by a star flare, a space station/ship that may be broken, and an organic ship resembling a manta ray.

Hope Rides Again is the second book by Andrew Shaffer featuring Joe and Barack as amateur detectives. I think the premise is starting to stretch thin, but it was entertaining enough to keep me occupied for a few hours while sitting in the hospital. 💙📚
Cover of Hope Rides Again by Andrew Shaffer. Cover picture features Barack Obama hanging on to a ladder dangling from a helicopter. His left arm is outstretched and grasping on to the arm of Joe Biden to pull him up in the air. Joe is holding his aviator sunglasses in his left hand.

💙📚 yet another fantastic horror book from @chuckwendig.bsky.social. Less squick in this one than in some of his others, just as much fantastic storytelling. Complex characters, a hefty dose of humor (including laugh-out-loud moments), and a sprinkle of political spite. Highly recommend.
The cover of The Staircase in the Woods by Chuck Wendig. It features a picture of the aforementioned staircase in the woods. There is a bird on the railing about halfway up the spiral staircase.

💙📚 I don’t usually post picture books, but I kept seeing this on a book truck at work when I was having one of those days. Cute story with a funny twist. I can verify that it is good for reading out loud. I bought it for my second cousin and read it appropriately eleventy-billion times this weekend.
Cover of I Hate Everything by Sophy Henn. Cover features a cartoon ghost (white sheet with eyes variety) yelling the title of the book. Next to him is a smaller ghost saying “Really?”

Furthermore, these bad actors like to scream loudly about the 1st Amendment when challenged or criticized. Freedom of expression and freedom of the press are NOT freedom from consequences. But they’ve co-opted the 1st Amendment as a shield against criticism.

Information Literacy is complicated by bad actors have learned to cloak themselves in the guise of respectability: American College of Pediatricians is NOT the American Academy of Pediatrics but they intentionally sound so similar it’s very easy to confuse them even if you know about them.

I have not spent much time looking into the regulations for fedex. I have spent an irrational amount of time studying USPS regulations for mailing live (and deceased) animals. I fell down that particular rabbit hole because my grandfather had a mail order alligator as a child.
