Born 90 years ago today: Ferid Murad, son of an Albanian teenager who sold candy across the Balkans, spoke seven languages on under a year of schooling, and was renamed at Ellis Island. At UVA in the 1970s the son worked out why nitroglycerin stops angina: it releases nitric oxide. Nobel, 1998.

Follow up to the book post: there is a companion textbook, and it is free too. Biochemistrypedia comes out of years of teaching a large biochem course at UVA. Thirty lessons, no account, nothing to install. Drag Vmax and Km and watch the curve move. biochemistrypedia.com

We self-published a history of biochemistry book. The Molecule Hunters is 133 profiles of the people who decoded life, from a physician weighing a willow tree in the 1640s to structural biologists predicting protein folds with AI. 190 scientists, eleven parts, four centuries.

Congrats to Sushanth Kumar on his first corresponding author paper in Glia! 🎉👏 Using single-cell mass cytometry—like doing Western blots for every individual cell—this study maps the unique signaling signatures of microglia during viral and bacterial infections. doi.org/10.1002/glia...

GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) are transforming the treatment of obesity and diabetes (and more). Our recent pre-print examined next-gen small molecules mimicking GLP-1, using humanized mouse models to uncover how they interact with brain circuits driving food consumption. 1/15

Huge congrats to Lizzy et al for showing how next-gen GLP1R drugs hack your amygdala to make your dopamine neurons say 'nah' to that second slice! 🧠🍰❌ Another great collab with @aguler.bsky.social 🔥"https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2024.12.12.628169v1

Excited to share our latest findings, now published @NatureNeuro www.nature.com/articles/s41... We found unmyelinated axons exhibit pearls-on-a-string morphology's due to their membrane mechanical properties. Threads will follow!
