Can you ask how his endorsement of Fairclough relates to housing, is there something that convinced him she would take in the issue seriously?

The meta point is that council(s) tend towards doing nothing, so the level of unfairness and inefficiency needed to spur any action is unfathomable, and we just watch them flop around with bad arguments

Nowhere is the gerontocracy more alive, and unrepentant, than municipal government.

Haven't heard anything other (understandable given that until the revisions it seemed on track). Last I heard they were going even tighter on intl students

Of all places, you’d think Windsor would have bigger things in mind. But that municipal politics folks! Don’t let these people decide anything!

Fair! Thats one candidate more than is proposing congestion pricing / tolls

Deny Sullivan @denysullivan.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
My thinking is that the the CAP losers are still a relatively small group for now, so the much broader group would only need a ~10% hike to cut the CAP losers by 50%

Flabbergasted to learn that Toronto is considering peak hour pricing for TRANSIT. Tolls are inconceivable but this is fine?

The ultimate version of this is to set up new buyer or new home tax credits / checks that will roughly approximate the CAPs impact and pay for it with rate increases

Me quoted in the Star today, reasserting what might be my least popular take: Toronto needs formal, organized political parties www.thestar.com/news/gta/cit...
thestar.com
Toronto tried — and failed — to put political parties on city election ballots decades ago. Why this time may be different
In 1969, Toronto tried a political party experiment. Now, powerful advocacy groups act as de facto parties behind the scenes.

Weak shit from a libertarian Premier. Alberta is falling, less obtrusive government, but a couple talk radio calls from angry seniors and we’re caving

It's time to end Ontario's era of "Tall and Sprawl". Our archaic building code rules have resulted in housing that is uglier, more expensive, and with fewer units that make sense for families. By changing the rules, we can build communities more beautifully and affordably.

At some point you need to ask whether the petty complaints of seniors are worthy of publishing. Like, this is fodder for thanksgiving dinner talk, not the CBC, and surely not a pressing matter of government

We let national immigration policy be thwarted by the median council votes in Toronto and Vancouver and it's nuts to me that's not how this is understood.

Seems really bad to you, but many with homes might not mind. IMO part of the mental gymnastics at play is that DCs are needed to keep prices up

Availability payments (instead of tolls) are very common in highways. IIRC the new stretch to antigonish is privately funded and operated that way

Don’t want to expose anyones dirty laundry, but can show stock market reactions. In 2022 ALX (aussies) bid to buy Chicago’s Skyway toll road from OMERS. The stock fell 15-20% immediately and hasn’t recovered.

Partly, but it’s also the intense commercial pressure for these people to get deals done. Principal agent problems are critical in finance

Working in infrastructure investing, it is very often the complete opposite, with investors crazily overbidding for the extremely rare chance at these assets

I have had one bad large corporate landlord in the past. In contrast, I've had multiple bad holding company/solo landlords that were all local. Corporate landlords can be good and bad. Local landlords can be good and bad. We valorize the latter too much.

I get that hating capitalism is like catnip, but housing is one of least capitalistic sectors! Every detail of what, where, and how is set by (especially local) governments.

Progressives continuously center their housing advocacy around financialization, and its a mistake. Countless words about Milton Friedman and REITs, and very little thought about how racialized communities are victims of a planning system that enshrines the Glebe, and forces development onto them
