I think it might be time to start stockpiling thermometers 🌡️ At some point this week the climate crisis will be solved by banning the manufacture, sale or use of all devices used for the measurement of temperature.

these old horizontal pendulum seismometers still give the best signals from teleseismic surface waves

The UK now has more citizen science raspberryshake seismic stations than professional ones. Some detect surprisingly good signals from 8000km away, even with sub-optimal sites tgey see big events. R94C3 is in my garden office (aka the shed) and detected P waves from todays California earthquake ⚒️

This year the ShakeOut date for the USA fell on the 35th anniversary of the deadly and destructive Loma Prieta earthquake, but those of you in Aoteoroa New Zealand still have a week to get involved.

Attending conferences as an exhibitor can get a bit draining, especially when they put the exhibition stands in a windowless basement. however sometimes you get to spend a week by the sea in Corfu, so not all bad. thank you to the European Seismological Commission local organising committee

In case you suffer from FOME (fear of missing earthquakes), it is good that places like the Ikebukuro Life Safety Learning Center in Tokyo give you the opportunity to catch up. Here, Jen and I have a quick run through the shaking from the 2011 M9.0 Tohoku-Oki earthquake. It was... a lot.

10/10 for this fantastic caption from the BBC. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
Classic posed pic of a man in a cap and red jumper (no gloves or eye protection, tut tut) with a geological hammer and a carrot against a rock face. He is turned to face the camera.
Caption reads: "The discovery was made by Elias Rugen, here pretending to hammer in a coveted golden spike. For now he's making do with a carrot"
