The Ninetyeast Ridge is that long, wierd linear feature one can spot on a seafloor map of the eastern Indian Ocean. A hot spot was always the likely origin of it, but it's not so simple as the hotspot interacted with the evolving mid-ocean ridge. 🧪⚒️ www.nature.com/articles/s41...
Bathymetric map of the Ninetyeast Ridge. The ages (yellow text) are in Ma with 2σ uncertainty. DSDP and ODP drill sites and dredge sites (white text) that were dated are shown as solid white circles and triangles, respectively. photo I snapped two months ago today while aboard the JOIDES Resolution in northern Baffin Bay — yes, the outsized clast of igneous rock (interpreted as IRD; ice-rafted debris) is notable, but check out that lamination/bedding — that's what I'm excited about 🤓
Freshly split sediment cores on the description table aboard the JOIDES Resolution drillship. Millimeter- to centimeter-scale lamination and bedding is visible, along with a notable outsized clast of igenous rock embedded in the muddy sediments.
