GGR 2026 16 sailors address a good size crowd the day before departure. 7-8 months alone at sea for a non-stop circumnavigation race. A few will complete, may they all make it home safe.

Going through some of my father's papers I came across - what in my professional life I'd tout as a great archival discovery - a letter from the (unrelated, and I think not Jewish) Mandlers who sponsored my father's and his family's visas to the US in 1939, out of the goodness of their hearts. Seems to me that the shadow chancellor, Mel Stride, accusing the new PM, Andy Burnham, of "breathtaking hypocrisy" over his proposed pro-consumer cost of living measures, is itself a fine example of breathtaking hypocrisy.

What I really want to hear Burnham say is that awful, evil politicians have been fearmongering and weaponising the whole issue of immigration, in a way that causes everyone harm. He doesn’t even need to mention that Starmer was one of them.

And then they throw in some Celtic languages and yoink bits of languages from around the world along the way. The result: a language where there are usually about 10 different ways to say something, but when it comes to writing, you sit at your desk for 20 minutes trying to think of one 🤣 #amwriting

At any given moment you could ask yourself: What’s the most cynical, self-interested, irresponsible and yet also incredibly basic thing you could do now, and that’s precisely what he’ll do - whether it’s making anti-immigration videos or joining Reform. And yet, despite the obviousness of the action itself, he will always pursue it with this look of deep seriousness, as if he were Napoleon devising the Italian campaign.

Burnham is radical on devolution, public ownership and electoral reform. He has appointed serious people with proven track records. He is charismatic, has real emotional presence, and a proven appeal to voters. Why wouldn’t a progressive be excited? open.substack.com/pub/arguably...

Trying to work out if the BBC presenters commenting on the PM's focus on rough sleeping, and it not having been eradicated completely locally in Manchester, are being disingenuous or dense. In the UK, PM's have somewhat more influence over the national economic and social context than Mayors.

With Penelope Keith’s passing, I got to thinking about Paul Eddington, in his final days, facing the camera that one last time, despite the shitty hand life had dealt him, and the courage it must have taken to do so. Given the chance to spin some grandstanding bullshit, he chose to say this instead:
“A journalist once asked me what I would like my epitaph to be and I said I think I would like it to be ‘he did very little harm’. And that’s not easy. Most people seem to me to do a great deal of harm. If I could be remembered as having done very little, that would suit me”.

From @therickwilson.bsky.social. He’s urging all of us to stop trying to shame the GOP, because they will never feel it and will never change bc of it. Power and money is all they care about, but what they fear is losing both. We must then all vote in large numbers that the GOP can’t dispute it.

Condemning riots isn't enough. We need policy action, including an immediate appraisal of X as a vehicle for coordinating far-right disorder. And we need political leadership, to challenge white nationalism as an idea, not to validate it daily and then complain when it turns violent.
