iiinova — where your digital self keeps evolving

They're trying to install a dictator and this is what you ask? They don't care. This was part of their plan the whole time. Start meeting the moment.

For anyone actually reading this, you may have noticed that I didn't include commerce or promotion in my reasons. Those are certainly valid, but nothing I care about. My DIY mindset was forged in the crucible of 90s hardcore; I'm driven to do this until I can't, and I'll happily lose money doing so.

020

Finally, and probably mostly importantly, I put out physical releases because it's fucking cool. Having something I can hold and sit with the artwork, lyrics, and liner notes is fucking cool. Giving that experience to others is fucking cool. Being part of something bigger than myself? Fucking cool.

DJ Shadow featured in the movie Scratch (2002)

Releasing stuff physically makes me part of an ongoing conversation happening across generations. I've thought about this DJ Shadow clip for decades, and it's beautiful that someone can find and be moved by someone else's "broken dreams" in a totally different time & place. youtu.be/1gpKYnRdf0A?...

Speaking of algorithms, digital is ephemeral. Your music on streaming services only lasts as long as those services are live and someone's paying the annual Distrokid bill. Once you're dead, that's probably it for your music. My shit will hopefully be haunting dollar bins long after I'm gone.

120

Holding the physical manifestation of something you poured your guts into making is enormously satisfying. It's a complete, finished work that you control every aspect of, and listeners encounter your music the way *you* want them to, not getting having it served piecemeal by some algorithm.

I've been making and physically releasing music for 31 years: tapes, CDs, 7"s, LPs, a 10", and even a VHS tape. Here are my reasons for putting shit out physically:

Your colleagues across the aisle have abandoned democracy and are openly trying to install a dictator. They don't care about people or due process. Only power.

DEF MAGNETIC @defmagnetic.bsky.social · 09/10/2025

His response to everything is talking about health care and/or begging for bipartisanship.

I've never heard the Smiths. I'm sure I've been places where a Smiths song was playing, but I didn't know it was a Smiths song. Even now that I can pull up every song they've ever made with zero effort, I don't care enough to do so.

DEF MAGNETIC @defmagnetic.bsky.social · 07/10/2025

REPUBLICANS ABANDONED DEMOCRACY AND ARE TRYING TO INSTALL A DICTATOR. *That's* the story. Every time you guys beat around the bush with this shit brings their plan one step closer to fruition. YOU NEED TO START MEETING THE MOMENT.

It's incredibly sad watching you send out your comms team several times a day to post about affordable health care when you should be in Chicago or Broadview right now fighting for not only your constituents—including the Dreamers you've spent decades advocating for—but American democracy itself.

DEF MAGNETIC @defmagnetic.bsky.social · 03/10/2025

And congressional Dems are still talking about healthcare subsidies instead of fascists breaking down people's doors and snatching them in the middle of the night. Like, healthcare subsidies are important, but don't mean anything if American democracy dies and they finish gutting the system anyway.

Not futile at all! Trump is very unpopular. They should repeatedly file articles of impeachment (one for every impeachable offense) and then savagely beat Republicans over the head with their votes protecting him. Repeat. Start driving the narrative instead of meekly and belatedly reacting to it.

DEF MAGNETIC @defmagnetic.bsky.social · 01/10/2025

Let's be clear: Republicans didn't "jam through" anything. You guys let them pass it in exchange for a vote on a doomed-to-fail amendment. As you get ready for retirement, know that the feckless timidity of you and your colleagues is leading to the absolute ruin of everything you ever worked for.

In any other country, if federal agents fired upon journalists when unprovoked — what would we call it? If federal agents marched down streets demanding papers — what would we say? Authoritarianism — let’s not pretend it’s something else when it happens in our American cities.

No negotiations. No votes until the lawlessness stops. This is the best leverage you have. Don't throw it away.

DEF MAGNETIC @defmagnetic.bsky.social · 19/09/2025

Using this "health care" angle is political malpractice. The crisis is already underway, and extending subsidies past the midterms only helps the GOP electorally by insulating them from the consequences of their actions. It's insane you guys are so bad at this. No votes until the lawlessness stops.

Where is Warren Spector in all this? As the Epic Mickey guy, I think he should weigh in on this.

My favorite song of theirs is "If it's here when we get back it's ours" from their first 7". An all-time classic for me.
