Joyce Carol Oates quoting a tweet that says “wherever he [Elon Musk] goes, he wants to leave”:

"wherever he goes, he wants to leave"-- that's because when he gets there, he has brought his own self along; & whatever club he's invited to join has been devalued by the invitation.

Googling Stuff: Then v Now.
This title if the comic is ‘Googling Stuff…’
The comic shows two columns: on the left is “Then” showing search results with one thing listed as “the thing you want”

On the right column is ‘Now’ - also showing search results but in this case it’s a whole bunch of stuff you don’t need:

Even in the 1980s, India has a domestic industry which manufactured things like electrical appliances, toys, tools etc. Much of it was shoddy but still 100% Indian. Today all these goods are Chinese imports.

Yes, even today their method is to infiltrate existing organizations bit by bit and take them over gradually by radicalizing the existing members. They do it everywhere, from the army, judiciary...even resident associations in housing societies. Social Media was a godsend for them.

The INC is in a pinch, they don't know how to articulate progressive values in a time when the "overton window" has been shifted so far right, that cultural progressivism especially around the Hindu religion sounds treasonous.

Traveling Salesman @definite.bsky.social · 09/12/2024
...especially because the Trump admin looks like such a mirror image of the Modi regime...ie a projected hardline authoritarian, a focus on cultural majoritarianism, and actually controlled behind the scenes by capitalist billionaire cronies.
151
Traveling Salesman @definite.bsky.social · 09/12/2024
I think that the few big American conglomerates that invested big in India are getting this now and so we see the US government, at the behest of corporate America, cracking down on India's no.1 crony capitalist ie the Adani group. It will be interesting to see if the Trump admin continues this.
133
Traveling Salesman @definite.bsky.social · 09/12/2024
So today we have a scenario where the BJP has stagnated the Indian economy for 10+ years. The economy is controlled by Indian crony capitalists who don't make anything, but only serve as gatekeepers and middle-men for Chinese imports. And the promised billion+ consumer class is now a mirage.
232
Traveling Salesman @definite.bsky.social · 09/12/2024
The big industrial houses have also aligned totally with the BJP and provide it with massive financial backing. In return, the BJP carved out monopolies for them and backtracked on liberalization. The western companies that invested in India over the last 2 decades are really feeling the pinch now.
131
Traveling Salesman @definite.bsky.social · 09/12/2024
Everyone bought this lemon, and since then BJP has used its power to radicalize the Hindu masses more and more. To the extent that the economic agenda has been left by the wayside, and the bulk of Hindus care only about cultural majoritarianism as long as they get a few handouts here and there.
131
Traveling Salesman @definite.bsky.social · 09/12/2024
The global financial crisis was an inflexion point, where BJP managed to convince Indians that the INC was corrupt and could no longer deliver progress at the rate they were accustomed to for 15 years. They propped up Modi as an authoritarian unlike Manmohan Singh but with the same economic agenda.
132
Traveling Salesman @definite.bsky.social · 09/12/2024
Together the BJP, its NRI supporters and the nascent billionaire class convinced the US that the BJP was the party to support if it wanted greater market access to India. The era of liberalization under Manmohan Singh also showed India as a stable country with a growing consumer class.
122
Traveling Salesman @definite.bsky.social · 09/12/2024
So naturally these NRIs have gravitated towards the BJP, because it promises both: a complete focus on Hindu cultural majoritarianism to the exclusion of everything else, which also in turn guarantees India will not have any kind of meaningful social and scientific progress.
112
Traveling Salesman @definite.bsky.social · 09/12/2024
These "Non-Resident Indians" (NRIs) have a schizophrenic attitude towards India: They want a Hindu cultural resurgence because they want to feel less ashamed of their origins, but they also really don't want India to prosper, because then it would invalidate their choice to immigrate away from India
222
Traveling Salesman @definite.bsky.social · 09/12/2024
Mostly, these are kids who crammed for competitive exams during their childhood, and left Indian shores at age 20, without understanding the country very deeply. Their model of Indian history and current affairs is very shallow and based on conspiracy theories and their own inferiority complexes.
123
Traveling Salesman @definite.bsky.social · 09/12/2024
Around this time, the Indian diaspora in the North America, Europe, Aus and Middle East had risen to become a significant political force. This diaspora, IMO, is largely muddle-headed and suffering from all sorts of cultural inferiority complexes.
