At some point, the predictable problem of sailing on a small ship in the company of a large carnivorous cat manifested itself. One day, perhaps when he had his back to it and stooped, the cheetah attacked Fitzjames. It grabbed him from behind and would not let go until ‘beaten with an iron bar’. After this the pet had to go, and it is a sign that Fitzjames had completely recovered from his bullet wounds that this assault did him no lasting damage.
