The paper describing the new solar wind modelling framework, SURF (which includes HUXt) is published. The code is up on github and will be installable from conda and pypi in a week or so. link.springer.com/article/10.1...

How can we know what the Sun was like well before the age of telescopes and scientifically accurate instruments? The Earth itself is an instrument! In particular, the trees and ice sheets act as an old directory full of archived data and records. They ARE the observatory. 🔭🧪

Physics-Constrained Reconstructions of Sunspot Number from Millennial-Scale Annual Heliospheric Modulation Potential - Solar Physics
Long-term solar magnetic variability governs the space climate conditions. These variations also modulate the galactic cosmic ray influx reaching Earth and subsequently regulate the production of cosm...

Grateful to mathewjowens.bsky.social for asking the question, "were solar cycles different in the past?", which culminated to this first step of finding the answer.

While the new record broadly corroborates with our current understanding of the host star, it potentially reveals important insights into extreme solar activity phases including Grand Solar Minima (GSMs).

The new method utilises a Bayesian inversion technique constrained by a suit of Physics-based models to yield more reliable estimates of Space Climate conditions over the last ~1000 years, and of course this can be extended further back.

We at @unirdg-met.bsky.social @uniofreading.bsky.social along with a team of international colleagues have devised a novel method that contributes to reconstructing the past millennial scale Space Climate from ancient tree wood samples. Check out our new paper link.springer.com/article/10.1...

This is our first ever genuine forecast driven by in situ observations (and coronagraphs for the CME). It ain't perfect, but it's promising.
Time series plots of observed (real-time) solar wind speed, density and temperature, alongside model forecasts. There's reasonable agreement, particularly in the CME arrival time.

🌟 Happy Solstice Day! The Sun's turn has begun — now heading south again. 🌅 The twist: the latest sunset still hasn't happened! ☀️ 🍓 The full Strawberry Moon (June 29) rides the LOWEST arc of the year up north — big & golden on the horizon! 🔗 bit.ly/june-solstice-2026 #JuneSolstice2026

If you need to reconstruct the solar wind -- for example, to understand coronal mass ejection propagation to Earth -- you might be better off ditching coronal models and using real solar wind observations to constrain your model. agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/...
Plots of a solar wind simulation for the May 2024 storms. There is good agreement with the available observations.

Bruh! Every new day since I moved to the UK, it feels like I've finally managed to understand different accents, but guess what, I ended up paying extra in the grocery shop last evening, cause I replied with a "no" when the cashier asked if I had a membership card. I HAD it with me! 👀

Absolutely agree! "We can't assume that a clear Sun means no space weather". Auroral activity record during the MM 👇🏻 ; quite frequent and significant 🤔
Sunspot data: SILSO; auroral data: Wang+ (2021)
