I found this truly remarkable graph in the Wikipedia article on "Cost of electricity by source", in the process of researching possible addition of #solar panels to our recently purchased house. I hadn't realized just HOW quickly #solar had transformed itself from […] [Original post on zeroes.ca]
TRENDS IN COST OF ENERGY (2010–2019)

X-Y plot of the cost of various energy sources against their installed capacity over the time period 2010–2019. Each energy source is represented by an arrow. The tail of the arrow represents the energy source's cost and installed capacity in 2010; the head of the arrow represents its cost and installed capacity in 2019.

The vertical (Y) axis is cost in USA dollars per megawatt-hour, on a linear scale from $50 to $300.

The horizontal (X) axis is cumulative installed capacity in gigawatts, on a logarithmic scale from zero to 1000.

The types of energy are:

* Offshore wind: from (0, $165) slightly down to (45, $120).

* Onshore wind: from (180, $85) sharply down to (700, $50).

* Coal: from (1500, $110) horizontally to (2500, $110).

* Nuclear: from (300, $100) sharply UP to (400, $160).

* Solar: from (40, $350) very sharply down to (600, $70).

Please block and REPORT this account. It's fascist apologism thinly disguised as both-sidesism, calls for "dialogue" with fascists, and blaming "the people" as whole for fascist vileness. Anything we don't like is a misunderstanding, or our own fault, or both […] [Original post on zeroes.ca]

I think the most pressing and fundamental problem of the day is that people lack a practically effective means of sorting out questions of fact in the larger world. We can hardly begin to discuss ways of addressing reality if we can't agree what reality even is, after all.

The institutions that have served this role in the past have dropped the ball, so the next best solution is talking to each other, particularly to those who disagree, to sort out conflicting claims.

Unfortunately, far too many actively oppose this, leaving all opposing claims untested. It's very regressive.

So that's my hobby, striving to understanding the arguments of all sides at least because it's interesting to see how mythologies are formed but also because maybe through that process we can all have our beliefs tested.

But if nothing else, social media platforms like this are chances to vent frustrations that on so many issues both sides are obviously wrong ;)

PSA: not only do I personally have a very low tolerance for #WHATABOUTISM — when someone responds in that way to posts about an issue of vital and immediate importance, it raises reasonable suspicion as to their good faith. That kind of behavior is straight out of […] [Original post on zeroes.ca]

@servelan Replacement of workers by automation is only one of MANY reasons we need #UBI, ANY ONE of which would be adequate BY ITSELF to make the case for #UBI. The most important reason of all is that as long as unemployment can threaten us with destitution, we […] [Original post on zeroes.ca]

@valkyrie.hacker.gf Congratulations, you've just scored the upper right corner!
EXECUTIVE DYSFUNCTION BINGO

3 × 3 bingo card with characteristic scenarios of executive dysfunction:

UPPER LEFT:

There are two things
That need doing,
can't pick,
thus doing neither

UPPER MIDDLE:

Need to do one thing
but it requires doing
three other things first,
so not even starting

UPPER RIGHT:

Could do the thing but
stuck under a soft
pet or human,
so not doing it yet

MIDDLE LEFT:

"This would be so much
easier if I wasn't this
hungry, but then I'd
have to stop to eat..."

CENTER:

"Uhh, what was I doing?"

MIDDLE RIGHT:

Wanting to do that thing
you really enjoy and
have been meaning to,
but then not doing it

LOWER LEFT:

That one thing that
would take five minutes
to do - better put it
off and stress
out about it for a while

LOWER MIDDLE:

Could do that one simple
household task, could get
stuck reading about
weird oceanic life
or bizarre history or bugs
instead

LOWER RIGHT:

"This should be so easy,
how is everyone else
just doing it??
Welp, guilt time"

(I should really have been doing something else and not making this - @sinituulia@eldritch.cafe)

I'm seeing some concern that #Europe is not prepared for a full-on confrontation with the #USA. True enough, but not as important as one might think. On December 7th, 1941, #Japan was ready for war; the #USA was not. They caught us flatfooted and asleep at the […] [Original post on zeroes.ca]

The only three of these boxes we haven't fully checked yet here in the #USA are: (1) Supremacy of the military (2) Controlled mass media (3) Fraudulent elections. But we're well advanced along the way to (1) and (2), and I have a feeling we'll have checked off (3) before long.

The latest calumny against critics of the #JackassParty leadership is that we're Russian propagandists trying to sow despair — that we're trying make people think there's no alternative to the "Republican" Nazis. That's a hell of an irony, coming from supporters of […] [Original post on zeroes.ca]

KING LOG AND KING STORK

The frogs prayed to Jove for a king:
"Not a log, but a livelier thing."
Jove sent them a Stork,
Who did royal work,
For he gobbled them up, did their king.

@alexisbushnell Stories of personal experience with #LongCOVID, like yours, are so horrifying. Yet those who aren't (yet?) personally affected — or think they aren't! — STILL repeat the #ItsMild nonsense.
Cartoon of a running woman, wearing a respiratory mask, pursued by green-skinned, hideously mutilated zombies. The zombies are yelling at her:

      "COVID IS MILD!"

      "TAKE OFF YOUR MASK!"

80 years ago, the USA helped rescue #Europe from fascism. My father fought in that war, as a gunner and radio operator on a B-17 in the European theater, dropping bombs on the #Nazis. (In case you're thinking the chronology doesn't add up: I'm 67, and when I was […] [Original post on zeroes.ca]
