A gold bird skull mostly buried in black sand. The image is washed out and grainy.

Everyone needs to go see Appofeniacs if it's playing near you. It is very bad, but in that way where it's indifference towards conventional rules of storytelling allow it to be genuinely shocking the whole way through. Each scene ends the way a Goosebumps chapter ends.

Letterboxd most recent 4: Appofeniacs, Wind River, Misericordia, Primetime

I had jury duty last year and the only part that wasn't sad or boring was the guy who spoke in near-constant Jim Carrey quotes, who got kicked out day one for shouting at the bailiff. And he was mostly just confusing.

I think we underrate that JCO came up in 20th century New York literary circles where everyone said five most devastating insults before breakfast and as one of the last one standing, her competition is guys who get sad if their chatbot isn't sufficiently nice to them.

-Detention (2011) is a horror parody that had the misfortune of coming out at around the same time as Cabin in the Woods and getting overshadowed by it. It's been a while since I've seen it but IMO it's a much more creative and out there watch than Cabin, seems to be starting to get it's due though.

Alright! -Really can't go wrong with Koji Shiraishi, provided you like very low budget found footage. Noroi is generally agreed to be his best film, it's probably the best entry point into his body of work. Record of Sweet Murder is also under seen IMO, with the qualifier that it's super scuzzy.

Really enjoyed the demo (surprisingly long one, too!) and it kind of threw me how much Angel Heart I was getting off it.

"Oh, you're challenging me to a fight?" I slowly strip off my shirt, revealing a full yakuza style back tattoo of a possum screaming. I fall to the ground and stop moving until you leave.

Happy bi visibility day, last year I saw Hozier at Fenway and the crowd was 90% women in flowing ethereal dresses and 10% dudes with mullets.

Also means that today my partner gets to bring up one of his favourites:

A screenshot of a tweet from @pissvortex that says “on the pride parade ‘boyfriend of bi girlfriend’ float with the other guys were chopping it up and hanging out. We’re all standing on the float holding a beer and they’re all cheering for us. More than the other floats even”

I like AW1 i part because it's a game where, due to unexplainable supernatural phenomena, Stephen King is now God and is using his powers to torture Stephen King. Control makes those supernatural phenomena boring, and the parts where it bleeds over in AW2 are poorer for it.

I don't know if this is a hot take but when I see horror media proudly advertising as "no gore or jumpscares" it comes across, to me, like when stand-up comedians tell you they're not gonna swear in their set. I don't necessarily need that content, but it tells me your audience is not me.

Nearly everytime I've read an article that's like "Critics are divided on X movie" it turns out the critics are actually pretty unified on that front, they just think it's dogshit.

Similar vibes as the most pivotal moment in the backstory of The Venture Bros being a screening of Sharky's Machine, so people (heroes and villains alike) refer to "movie night on Gargantua-1" with abject horror.

I don't think SAW is a great Saw movie, but it's a pretty fun as a cheap and sleezy Se7en knock-off.

A survival horror game I played earlier this year (Fear the Spotlight) had great atmosphere but gave out health pickups after every encounter. And I was like no! That's too much insurance! By the end I had enough to tank every attack of the final boss and that killed the tension immediately.

010

Hatsune Michael @decoster.bsky.social · 09/09/2026

I feel like I enjoy survival horror games best when my inventory feels like it can get me through 1, maybe 2 encounters in a pinch. Like any combat I'm not expecting is going to require a change in plans/additional caution going forward. At least one of my resources should always be close to empty.

I, as a general rule, do not play remakes of games I already own or have already played, because my main takeaway is that they were not made for me but instead for someone much younger who has never played said game before.

Important announcement: After seeing today's trailer I will not be buying the game I was already not planning on buying.

Favorite part of the Odyssey (2026) is whenever Odysseus makes the wrong call and gets some dudes killed he sees Athena looking sad. I'm trying to picture how I feel if I fucked up bad enough at work to see the Virgin Mary.

The platforming is definitely more demanding due to the time limits imposed by the escort mission and the flooding platformer section at the end but it's not particularly obtuse and if you've been collecting health upgrades you can tank a large amount of the obstacles.
