#OnThisDay 1844 the Commons discussed the abolition of duelling. Four duels were said to have been fought in Britain in 1839 and four in 1840: api.parliament.uk/historic-han... One of the duels fought in 1840 was between two MPs, Edward Horsman and James Bradshaw.
A black and white drawing showing two gentlemen fighting a duel. Both have raised and fired their pistols. Four other men are present. The scene is taking place in the middle of a wood.

Happy Halloween! Here's evidence of the time I tried to carve a turnip! Believe me, pumpkins are so much easier! Pumpkins were not common in England, Scotland or Ireland, but folks did carve turnips or beets into lanterns to scare the dead away on this day of thinned veils between worlds

I love this bandage from c.1900 featuring illustrations on how to wrap wounds resulting from accidents involving a soldier, a sailor, a miner, and a woman whose clothes have caught fire. This amazing object is part of the Wellcome Collection in London.
A white bandage featuring sketches of how to bandage various wounds.

The last time troops policed America was in the 1770s. We fought a revolution against that king, and wrote into the Constitution the Second, Third, Fourth, and Fifth Amendments to prevent it from ever happening again. Pass it along…

Next time you visit York, take note of this carving of a plague doctor outside York Minster Cathedral. It was recently carved out of magnesian limestone to replace figures eroded by time, as part of the ongoing restoration of the East Front. I love this little fellow.
A carving of a plague doctor wearing a beaked mask, long robe, gloves, and a brimmed hat. He's also holding a pole, and he has a little satchel.

This is fucking GREAT news!
Did you know if you swear a lot you're probably more honest and trustworthy than people who don't. Researchers have found that if you use unfiltered speech in the form of curse words you're more comfortable expressing your unfiltered thoughts and feelings too. You're also more likely to have a higher verbal intelligence.

Heart-shaped pendant with a lock of hair from Marie Antoinette. If this is her hair, it must have been presented before the abortive flight to Varennes in 1791, when Marie's hair allegedly went white overnight. Is it possible for a person’s hair to go white overnight? 1/2
A heart-shaped pendant with a lock of blonde hair inside. The hair is braided at the end. There is also a padlock at the bottom of the pendant and a gold chain at the top. At the bottom of the chain is a small key.

The Fourth Circuit is famously succinct. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...
The United States Government has no legal authority to snatch a person who is lawfully present in the United States off the street and remove him from the country without due process. The Government's contention otherwise, and its argument that the federal courts are powerless to intervene, are unconscionable.
