Oregon High School Librarian of the Year 2024. Believes graphic novels are great for kids, pizza for breakfast is delicious and every school library should have a full time certified librarian plus full time assistant.

Q3. Romance, science fiction, thrillers, and realistic fiction are the primary genres. I haven’t read much nonfiction in years but I’m itching to read it. I recently started the audiobook Enshitification by Cory Doctorow and I’m loving it. #TLSkyChat

Q1. The Midnight Train by Matt Haig because I’ve read all his books and he’s one of my favorite authors. My top YA read is The Heirs by Friday Abike-Iyimide. Her previous thrillers have been great. #TLSkyChat

Q4. I used to give myself the month of July to read whatever I wanted and then I would read books for school in August. This year, I’ve read more adult books throughout the year so I think I’ll be reading more for school this summer — not PD books but ones I’ll probably booktalk. #TLSkyChat

I have separate manga and graphic novel/nonfiction sections. Manga is organized by series title and I just genrefied them — we will see how it goes. Graphic novels are shelved by author’s last name and I also recently genrefied them. Students are upbeat about the genrefication so far!

Student: You have shrinky dinks this month?! I failed at them in art class. Me: Well, you can't fail at shrinky dinks in the library! Student: That's right, you can't fail in the library! I can't wait to do shrinky dinks. Yay, library win! Also, so sad a teacher failed a kid for shrinky dinks.

The dismantling of IMLS will have major impacts on the library services provided to students in schools and patrons who access their public libraries If you value your library, you must speak out & contact congress

6 minutes until the ALA Youth Media Awards, the only awards I look forward to all year. So exciting! And a reminder there are so many excellent and enjoyable books that don’t win book awards and kids (and adults) should be able to read widely for pleasure.

Very worrying that a city the size of Salem could lose its public library?!

Some of my HS students are struggling to finish choice books. Do you have any lesson ideas for teaching HS students about reading stamina & book selection? I do Book Speed Dating & talk about genres, vocab, interests but I need more explicit instruction and I'm hoping for some tips & ideas. Thanks!

Welp. Apple snuck something dirty in our phones last night. Settings > Apps > (pick an app) > Siri > Learn From this App TOGGLE OFF. You have to go through each app. My garage app, my BANKING APPS, others had that turned on automatically. 😡
Screenshot of a phone setting highlighting the “learn from this app” invasion of privacy, courtesy of Siri, toggled on. The app is a password manager, which is concerning.

It felt so great to see Juniors borrowing The Serpent King and In The Wild Light after I book talked them this week. They’re such gorgeous books and my heart is full. @jeffzentner.bsky.social

Library win today: a student who is doing an extensive research project was convinced about a piece of misinformation last month. Today he told me he'd been wrong. I asked what changed his mind and he said "reading scholarly sources versus people's unreliable websites." Let him carry this forward!

Our library circulation is up as more students are reading and finishing books, and I want to keep momentum. I'm developing a strong collection, offering more small pop-up displays this year, & trying to do more book talks to classes. What are your best book promo methods this year? #TLsky

To all my school librarian friends, I figured out how to make a starter pack of librarians to follow on BlueSky. Follow it and the #TLSky hashtag. go.bsky.app/JPeAYQG

I don't know who needs to hear this, everyone I think, but if you send a PDF to your kindle and put 'convert' as the subject it will change it to epub format for you, you're welcome (I posted this on the other place and was surprised by how many people it helped so thought I'd do it here too.)
