… a passing necromancer heard about the town’s plight and came to investigate. He was able to cure the plague, but the town no longer had sufficient people to handle the fields. The necromancer reanimated the deceased plague victims so they could tend the fields.

There’s a condition called Light Blight known to affect Drow in my setting. It causes their sensitivity to light to increase over time; in advanced cases, even a single burning ember can seem blindingly bright.
