The Addiction (1995) Vampire tropes through Abel Ferrera’s lens. The obvious allegory is heroin addiction, but it also captures a lingering fear of blood contamination that stretched into the mid-90s. Slight but striking 2.5/4

Playing the game would have meant some discontent at the Austria game at the Aviva no matter what, but the way today has panned out, I foresee a lot of anger raining down on the players from the stands. The atmosphere could be mutinous… if enough people care to show up

Sometimes certain people in these spaces can just be bad people and they use liberation coded language to gain personal power over other people for petty reasons. There's absolutely no understanding of the bigger picture. Communities have to be better at separating out toxic people.

One of the reasons I think this went viral even in queer circles is because everyone has seen this dynamic play out in some form in our spaces. We need a better way to root out toxic people utilizing the language of liberation in narcissistic and sociopathic ways to dominate spaces.

Players are not passive participants who have to do what they’re told. They have agency. They can take a stand and #stopthegame

091

Dean Van Nguyen @deanvannguyen.bsky.social · 23/09/2026

The decision should have been made by the FAI but the players are a legitimate target for the boycott. When social-minded footballers are told "shut up and play", we criticise that attitude. Well the door swings both ways. They should be scrutinised for just shutting up and playing in this situation

I saw many people get very exorcised once about a headline that described a victim as “girl, 6” instead of using the word “child” like it was trying to sanitise the incident. “girl, 6” couldn’t be clearer
